Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

DelVal's Upset Bid Falls Short Against 14th-Ranked Swarthmore

DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Undefeated and 14th-ranked Swarthmore College used a 12-0 run late in the game to pull away from host Delaware Valley University, 75-61.

The Garnet upped their record to a perfect 8-0 while the Aggies fell to 1-8.

DelVal's bid for the upset moved closer when Andre Butler sank a pair of free throws with 3:34 remaining to pull his squad within two, 61-53. However, the rest of the contest belonged to Swarthmore, starting with a layup by Robbie Walsh just 10 seconds after Butler's free throws.

Jim Lammers drilled a 3-pointer with 2:52 to go and Zack Yonda added a trey of his own 48 seconds later. Yonda then went to the free throw line and hit both attempts and Nate Shafer ended the big run with a layup with 28 seconds left to make it 73-59. An Edamiyon Doggett layup provided the final points for DelVal while Yonda added two from the foul line for a 75-61 final.

Swarthmore led 18-12 after the opening 10 minutes, but the Aggies went on an 18-7 run to take their largest lead of the game, 30-25, with 4:45 to go before the intermission. Austin Stoeckel scored five points in the run while Butler and Willie Britton added four points apiece.

The Garnet responded with a 12-1 run to take a six-point lead before DelVal ended the half with a 7-1 spurt and a 38-38 deadlock. Both teams shot 50 percent or better from the field and each were over 55 percent from 3-point land. The Aggies were 7-for-10 from beyond the arc, including two by Britton who had 12 points in the stanza.

The teams were tied on four different occasions in the second half (making it 10 ties for the game), the last coming when Swarthmore's Cam Wiley hit a layup to make it 55-5 with 9:01 left. That kick-started a 7-0 run for the Garnet that gave them the lead for good. DelVal pulled to within one possession late, but Swarthmore's big run put the contest away.

The Garnet finished the game shooting 48.2 percent from the field while the Aggies cooled off and finished 18-for-50 (36 percent). DelVal hit just two more treys on 12 attempts in the second half.

Walsh led Swarthmore with 17 points and nine rebounds while Zac O'Dell added 12 points and eight boards. Lammers finished with 10 points while Yonda and Conor Harkins chipped in nine points apiece.

Britton came off the bench and sparked the Aggies with 14 points, six rebounds and six assists. Butler scored 13 points and Stoeckel, starting at center and giving up five inches to Walsh, added 12 points and five boards. Brandon Curry and Alex Matsinye had nine and seven points respectively.

DelVal is off until December 29 when it travels to the Franklin & Marshall College Tournament and will take on the host school.
