GRANTHAM (PA) -- The Delaware Valley University men's hoopsters wrapped up its tip-off tournament at Messiah College with an 81-75 setback to Wilson College in the consolation game of the four-team bracket on Saturday afternoon.
The Phoenix improved to 2-1 on the year with the win while the Aggies fell to 0-3.
Rashaan Bean got the scoring started for Wilson with an and-1 play that sparked a 12-4 run for the Phoenix to start the game.
DelVal scored the next eight points behind five from
Joe Russell to tie the contest at 12 apiece.
Wilson got its lead back up to seven at 25-18 before DelVal got consecutive three's from
Austin Stoeckel and Andre Butler to get it back to a one-point game with 4:43 left in the first half. However, a 10-4 run by the Phoenix to close out the stanza gave Wilson a 35-28 advantage at the break.
With just over five minutes gone in the second half, the Phoenix held a nine point lead before
Damian Washington hit a three and
Willie Britton earned three the old fashioned way to make it 44-41with 14:12 still to play in regulation.
From there, Wilson outscored DelVal 14-7 over the next 5:30 to open up its largest lead of the game at 59-48 behind seven points from Keion Adams.
The Aggies still trailed by 11, 65-54, with just over seven minutes left before they went on a 14-4 run to close the gap to one with 3:15 on the clock. Stoeckel, Washington and Ryan Naccaratto all connected on big 3-pointers during the spurt.
After Ian Frazier hit two free throws for the Phoenix to extend the lead to three points, DelVal got a pair of steal and scores from Washington and Russell to take its first lead of the game, 72-71, with 2:23 to play in regulation.
Frazier then hit 5-of-6 free throws over the next minute to put Wilson back on top 76-72 and the Phoenix held on down the stretch to take the consolation game, 81-75.
Butler led all scorers with 21 points, seven rebounds and five assists to go with two steals. Washington followed with 20 points and three boards and Stoeckel pitched in 10 points on 2-of-2 shooting from beyond the arc.
Adams and Frazier each had 19 points in the win and Adams had a team-best seven rebounds to go with two blocks and two steals. Bean picked up five steals to go with 14 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots.
DelVal will return home to take on Penn State Berks on Tuesday, November 8 at 8 p.m.
