Box Score

ALLENTOWN (PA) – The Delaware Valley University women's basketball team was defeated by Hood College, 58-54, in the consolation game of the Scotty Wood Tournament on Saturday.

The two-day tournament was hosted by Muhlenberg College. The Aggies fell to 0-3 on the season while the Blazers evened their record at 2-2.

DelVal tallied eight of the game's first 10 points before Hood recorded six straight to even the score at eight apiece. The opening quarter ended in a 10-10 deadlock. With 8:27 to go in the second, senior Alexis Briscoe converted a pair of foul shots to put the Blazers ahead, 15-14. The Aggies followed with a 10-1 run to take a 24-16 lead with 3:18 left. Four players recorded points in the surge. Hood recovered to register the final seven points of the half and trailed 24-23 at the break. Juniors Taylor McGaughey and Allie Appleby both hit a three-pointer and freshman Mackenzie Grove had a free throw.

McGaughey nailed a three with 6:27 on the third quarter clock to tie the score at 28. That was the start of a 14-4 Blazer run in which five players contributed points, led by Briscoe's five. At the end of the spurt, Hood led 39-32 but DelVal had the next six points to cut the deficit to one. The Blazers bounced back for an 11-2 spurt that stretched into the fourth quarter. Briscoe's layup with 4:33 left gave Hood the largest lead of the game at 13 (55-42). It was too big of a hole for the Aggies to climb out of, as they closed the contest with a 12-3 run but came up short. Junior Sam Foy sank a triple to put DelVal within three. The Aggies forced a turnover but missed the potential tying shot. Senior Verkia Smith made a foul shot with one second remaining to seal the win.

McGaughey finished with 19 points, 12 in the second half, and six rebounds. Briscoe had 10 points and seven boards. Appleby contributed with eight points while senior Arianna Delerme and Smith added seven apiece. Appleby also had seven rebounds.

For DelVal, Foy posted a career-high 20 points, including 14 in the second half. She earned a spot on the all-tournament team. Freshman Danielle Skedzielewski totaled 11 points and six rebounds. With her nine points, senior Eireann Anastasi moved into 11th place on the all-time scoring list with 1,255 points. She passed Rachel Joyce (2003-07) and is just two points away from the top 10.
