DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley College notched a win over a nationally-ranked foe for the second night in a row as the 14th-ranked Aggies downed No. 25 Centenary College, 22-19, in the regular-season finale and Senior Night.
The win, combined with last night's 27-18 triumph at No. 24 The College of New Jersey, improved Delaware Valley to 11-5 in dual meets. The Cyclones fell to 6-6.
A random draw determined that the match would begin at 184 pounds and Centenary scored the first points of the night as a takedown with 12 seconds left gave Giovanni Santiano (7-1) a 5-3 decision over
Connor Gabriel (8-13).
However, Delaware Valley got 10 points from the power tandem of nationally-ranked wrestlers
Aaron Karns and
Zach Roseberry. Karns, a returning All-American ranked seventh at 197 pounds, pinned Vin Cordasco (1-9) in just 46 seconds to improve to 23-4 on the season. Roseberry, the ninth-ranked heavyweight in Division III, upped his mark to 21-5 as he built leads of 4-1 and 7-1 over the first two periods and finished with a 12-3 major decision over Brian Grise (11-12).
The two teams then exchanged pins as Delaware Valley maintained its seven-point at 16-9 halfway through the match. At 125, the Aggies'
Ronnie Dingle fought off three near-falls before succumbing to Erick Orellana (6-6). Delaware Valley got the six points back at 133 as, in the bottom position to start the second period,
Connor Kirkegard (13-7) was able to turn Alex Reeves over and get the pin at 4:38.
At 141 pounds, the Cyclones' Collin Farley (19-8) trailed by one in the as the clock neared the finish of his match with
David Davidson (20-10). However, Farley registered a takedown with just one second left for the 4-3 decision and to pull his team to within four at 16-12.
Delaware Valley's
Vinny Fava notched an early takedown and two-point near-fall and used it for a 4-2 victory over Joe Bartolini (11-12) at 149 pounds. Fava improved to 21-3 with the win and it upped the Aggie lead to 19-12 with three weights remaining.
Returning All-Americans for both teams were victorious in the next two weights. At 157, Delaware Valley's
Emmanuel Ajagbe was up 2-1 and with riding time when he added a takedown with 21 seconds left for a 5-1 decision over Craig Montgomery (6-4). The victory improved Ajagbe to 14-5 on the year and the senior moved into sole possession of fifth place on the school's all-time list with 110 victories.
At 165,
Alec Horan, who was honored before the match as part of Senior Night, had the task of facing three-time All-American and undefeated Chris Burdge. Horan (18-8) battled and trailed by just 2-1 after the period and 6-2 after the second, but the top-ranked wrestler in Division III went on to a 14-5 major decision to improve to 13-0 and keep Centenary's hopes alive at 22-16.
The Cyclones needed a pin in the final weight class to send the match to criteria as Josh Sibblies (13-4) took on the Aggies
Ben Schweiger (9-13) at 174 pounds. The two were scoreless in the first period and Sibblies picked up an escape point 10 seconds into the second. That was the lone point of the match for a 1-0 triumph, but Delaware Valley had the team win.
The Aggies now have two weeks to prepare for the NCAA Division III East Region Championships which will take place at King's College on Sunday, March 2. It is the qualifying tournament for the NCAA Division III Championships as the top three finishers in each weight class earn an automatic berth to nationals.
