Box Score DALLAS (PA) – Misericordia University hardly missed from the field or the foul line in the half as the Cougars built a 19-point lead at the break and cruised to an 84-68 victory over visiting Delaware Valley College in a Freedom Conference game.
The result, combined with others around the conference, left a four-way tie atop the standings as all four 2013 conference tournament participants (champion Delaware Valley, runner-up DeSales and semifinalists FDU-Florham and Misericordia) are 4-2 in league play. Delaware Valley (9-8 overall) travels to FDU-Florham on Wednesday, January 29 to conclude the first half of Freedom play.
The Cougars (9-7 overall) took a combined 38 shots from the field and the foul line in the first half and missed just 12 of them. They hit 16 of 27 shots (59.3%) from the field, including an 8-for-12 (66.7%) effort from 3-point land. From the charity stripe, they were 10-for-11 (90.9%).
The Aggies, who were without leading scorer
Francis Arnold for the second straight game due to an injury, led 11-10 seven minutes in before a 31-14 blitz made it a 41-25 Misericordia advantage with 3:33 to go. The Cougars eventually took a 50-31 lead into the intermission.
The advantage ballooned to as many as 22, including at 65-43 with 11 minutes left. Delaware Valley scored eight straight thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers from
Zach Sly and a jumper by
Zach Sibel, but Misericordia ended any hopes of a big Aggie comeback with five straight and 11 of 14 to put the lead back to 22.
The Cougars finished shooting 48.1 percent from the field, 52.4 percent from 3-point land and 88.5 percent from the free throw line. Steve Ware was a perfect 9-for-9 on foul shots as he finished with 21 points and eight rebounds. Matt Green sank six of seven from beyond the arc and had 18 points while Joe Busacca added 13 points and seven assists.
Slyscored 19 points and dished eight assists for Delaware Valley.
Chris Moran had a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds while
Jay Donovan and Zibel poured in nine and eight points respectively.
