LAS VEGAS (NV) – The Delaware Valley College wrestling team, ranked eighth in Division III, posted a 1-3 record at the 2013 Desert Duals. The Aggies picked up a 24-13 triumph over Menlo College after dropping their first three matches to nationally-ranked foes in No. 26 Heidelberg College (20-19), No. 7 Coe College (21-15) and No. 1 Wartburg College (31-9).
Junior 125-pounder
Zac Haynes had the biggest win of the entire tournament as he dominated the top-ranked wrestler in his weight class, Gilberto Camacho of Wartburg, en route to a 7-1 decision. Haynes went 3-1 on the day as he also had a 15-7 major decision win over Joe Brodman of Heidelberg and an 8-0 blanking of Coe's Tyler Endres. He improved his season record to 4-3.
Ninth-ranked
Vinny Fava remained undefeated on the year as the junior 149-pounder went 4-0 to up his season mark to 13-0. He pinned Wartubrg's Mark Pinero in 80 seconds, earned a 22-7 technical fall victory over Coe's Josh Dinkle and notched a 15-4 major decision over Menlo's Jose Maldano.
Haynes and Fava's victories over Wartburg in the third team match of the day gave Delaware Valley a 9-7 lead over the defending national champions after four weight classes. However, the Knights took the last six weight classes with a pin, three major decisions and two decisions. Two of those final triumphs featured head-to-head battles of nationally-ranked wrestlers. At 197, Wartburg's Punahele Soriano, ranked third, edged sixth-ranked and returning All-American
Aaron Karns, 7-4. Then at heavyweight, number three Ryan Frank pinned Delaware Valley
Zach Roseberry, ranked seventh, in 4:57.
The Heidelberg match was the opening bout for both teams and the Aggies won five of the first six weights to build a 16-4 lead. In addition to wins from Haynes and Fava,
Pat Davis picked up a 4-0 decision at 133 while returning All-American and fifth-ranked
Emmanuel Ajagbe pinned Brian Brunner with 10 seconds left in their 157-pound match.
Heidelberg used a technical fall and two major decisions in the next three matches to take a 17-16 advantage. Karns regained the lead for the Aggies by blanking Jason Russell, 4-0. However, Heidelberg won the match thanks to a 6-4 triumph by Nino Majoy over Roseberry at heavyweight.
Haynes, Fava and
David Davidson (141) helped Delaware Valley build an early 12-6 lead over Coe. Davidson's triumph was a big one as he earned a 3-0 decision over 10th-ranked Beau Westphal. However, Coe picked up decisions in five of the last six weights for the 21-15 triumph. Karns had the lone win for the Aggies in that run thanks to a 5-3 victory over Donnie Horner.
In the Menlo match, Delawarre Valley won six of the 10 weight classes, including a pin, a technical fall and a major decision. The pin came from
Pat Davis in the first period of his 133-pound match against Juan Zorrilla while returning national qualifier
Dallas Winston had the technical fall with a 16-0 blanking of Paul Bracamonte. Fava added the major decision which gave the Aggies the lead for good at 10-7.
Ajagbe earned a 10-6 decision over Christian Franks at 157 while Karns and Roseberry sealed the win with decisions over Ian MacIneirghe (6-4 decision) and Justin Harrison (4-1 decision) respectively. The victory gave Karns a 3-1 mark on the day and upped the junior's season record to 12-3.
Delaware Valley also had other wrestlers compete in matches that did not count toward the team's record but did count toward their individual statistics. Freshman 125-pounder
Joshua Di Santo led the way on Saturday as he pinned all three of his opponents.
