WASHINGTON, D.C. –
Jay Donovan scored 16 of his team-high 19 points in the second half and earned a spot on the Catholic University Holiday Inn-College Park Classic all-tournament team as Delaware Valley College picked up a 69-66 victory over Denison University in the consolation game.
Donovan, who had a career-high 28 points in Saturday's opening round loss to Husson University, got off to a slow start on Sunday as he managed just two shots (both 3-pointers, made one) in the first half. The sophomore heated up in the second half and finished 6-for-10 from the field, including a 5-for-9 effort from 3-point land.
The Aggies (6-5) used an 8-0 run midway through the first half to take the lead for good. They had a nine-point lead, 33-24, at the break and increased it to as many as 16 in the second stanza. The Big Red (4-7) fought back and pulled to within two, 68-66, as Alex Longi hit a trey with 14 seconds to go.
Delaware Valley's
Daulton Derr was fouled three seconds later and hit one of two shots from the line. Longi grabbed the rebound on the miss, but
Zach Sly stole the ball from him. However, Sly turned it right back and Denison had a final chance. Darius White's 3-point attempt just before the buzzer missed and the Aggies had the win.
Derr had 12 points and seven rebounds for Delaware Valley while Sly came off the bench and notched 11 points and four steals.
Francis Arnold had six points and dished out a game-high six assists in the win.
