ANNVILLE (PA) – Delaware Valley College nearly rallied from a 19-point, second-half deficit but host Lebanon Valley College held on for a 78-73 victory in the championship game of the Rinso Marquette Tournament.
The Aggies (1-2) trailed 41-25 at halftime and 50-31 in the early stages of the second stanza. They were still down by 18 with 13:07 remaining when they scored 23 of the game's next 28 points for a one-point deficit, 65-64, with 6:56 to go.
Jason Goldheimer hit a trio of 3-pointers as well as three free throws on another long-range attempt for 12 points in the run.
Jeremy Beckett and
James Jones added seven and four points respectively.
Lebanon Valley was still up two when it added three straight for a 73-68 advantage with 1:42 to go. Beckett hit one of two free throws, but Joe Meehan answered with a layup and Anthony Trautman followed with a free throw to give the Flying Dutchmen (2-1) a seven-point lead. The Aggies could not get any closer than four in the final minute.
Meehan was named the tournament Most Valuable Player as he had 20 points and five assists in the title game. Trautman added 17 points while Joey Giangiobe came off the bench and finished with 15 points and seven boards.
Beckett and Jones earned spots on the all-tournament team. Beckett was 10-for-17 from the field and finished with 23 points, 15 rebounds and six blocked shots. Jones added 17 points and seven assists. Goldheimer hit five treys and had 20 points on the afternoon. Freshman
