GLASSBORO (NJ) – Rowan University shot 64.8 percent from the field, including 73.1 percent in the second half, as the Profs captured the Heritage's Dairy Stores Classic with a 92-80 victory over visiting Delaware Valley College.
Rowan improved to 7-2 with the victory while the Aggies fell to 5-4. Delaware Valley does not take the court again until the new year when it hosts The College of New Jersey on Monday, January 4 (8:00 p.m.).
The Profs never trailed in the game as they connected on 35 of their 54 shots from the field and missed just seven of 26 attempts in the second half alone. The Aggies used long-range shooting to stay within range as they hit 11 of 28 shots from beyond the arc.
Rowan held a 40-29 lead at halftime and upped its advantage to as many 17 in the opening moments of the second stanza. The Profs were still up by double digits, 61-51, with 9:24 remaining when Delaware Valley scored 12 of the next 17 points to get to within three, 66-63, with 6:58 left on the clock.
James Jones had eight points in the run, including two treys, for the Aggies,
Rowan used an 8-0 run later in the contest to go up by 12. Delaware Valley got as close as six, 86-80, after another 3-pointer by Jones with 1:15 left, but the Profs went 4-for-4 from the foul line and added a layup for the 92-80 final.
Rowan had six players reached double figures in scoring, including tournament MVP Tyson Hartnett as he finished with 18 points and nine rebounds. Derek Piccini and Steve Secula added 15 points apiece while Sean Hughes and Allen Pritchett each had 14. Laud Anderson added 10 points in the win.
Jones earned a spot on the all-tournament team as he hit 10 of 15 shots from the field, including a 6-for-8 showing from 3-point land, and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line for 30 points. The junior guard also had three assists and three steals on the afternoon.
Chris Ellis added 13 points and six rebounds while
Chris Mayo came off the bench to pour in 12 points.
