One of the greatest wrestlers to ever hit the mats on any level, Smith is in the sixth year of his current run on the staff and his 23th overall year as an Aggie assistant. Â
As a member of the Aggie coaching staff following his time on the mat, Smith helped lead Delaware Valley to nine Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Championships, two East Regional titles (in its four years of existence), three Midwest Regional titles and a fourth-place finish at the 2004 NCAA Division III Championships. He took a two-year hiatus from the program before returning in 2010-11 under Steve Cantrel and now with Jim Wertman
Upon his return, Smith has helped lead the Aggies to a pair of fifth-place finishes at the NCAA Championships. The squad captured the MAC and NCAA Regional championships in 2015. The last two year, the Aggies crowned a national champion, upping the total to seven overall under Smith's tutelage. Â
As a wrestler, Smith’s four-year numbers at DelVal speaks for itself: an 88-1 record, a four-time All-American  and a three-time national champion at 142 pounds. Smith became the first national champion in DelVal history (any sport), in 1985 and repeated the performance in 1986.Â
Smith reached the finals in 1987 but dropped the only match of his collegiate career. After a year off, Smith went 32-0 and won a third national title in 1989. He is one of just six wrestlers in Division III history to capture three or more national championships. His 12-1 tournament record is also among the best in Division III history.
DelVal won three MAC titles and finished as the 1989 Division III runner-up during Smith’s four years. His .989 winning percentage is tops in Aggie history while his 88 wins rank in the top 20.
Outside of coaching, Smith owns a landscaping business.
