Aggies in Action: Katie Martin Tackles Veterinary Goals Head-On

| By:
DOYLESTOWN, Pa. - Whether she's competing on the lacrosse field or the wrestling mat, Delaware Valley University student-athlete Katie Martin is no stranger to tough challenges — and this summer, she's taking on a new one: veterinary medicine.

Martin is spending her break as an intern at a veterinary practice, assisting with everything from prepping vaccines and tracking vitals to restraining animals for blood draws and helping with appointments and surgeries.

"This internship is directly tied to the field I want to go into," she said. "It's been a great way to build foundational skills and knowledge I'll use for the rest of my life."

For Martin, her role as a DIII student-athlete helped make this opportunity possible. Thanks to connections made through sports at DelVal, she was introduced to a local veterinarian — and now joins them for farm ride-alongs as part of her training.

"It all started through conversations about my role as an athlete," she explained. "Those connections opened doors."

There have been moments of uncertainty, of course — but Martin faced them the same way she does on the field or the mat: with confidence and effort.

"Moving into a new job with new people and responsibilities is always nerve-wracking, but like in sports, you just take it head-on and do your best."

Her advice to other student-athletes considering a similar summer opportunity? Simple: "Go for it. You never know what could happen. It's such a rewarding experience."
