DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – Delaware Valley softball ended their season on a high note, sweeping Widener University at home, including an 8-0 shutout in game two.
Game 1 | Delaware Valley 7 – Widener 6
After a pair of doubles gave the Pride an early 1-0 lead, the Aggies responded quickly.
Jillian Collins singled up the middle to start the bottom of the first, followed by a
Sierra Ripka walk. After a
Kenzie Boyd sacrifice bunt, an
Amelia Funston single, and a
Madison Donnelly walk, the bases were loaded. Ripka scored on a wild pitch to give DelVal a 2-1 lead.
Widener answered in the third, tying the game before Gomez doubled to center, scoring McCarthy and Smith. Digandome then reached on an error in left field, allowing Gomez to score and putting the Pride ahead 5-2. In the bottom half,
Madison Karns reached on an error and later scored when Boyd also reached via error, cutting the deficit to 5-3.
In the bottom of the sixth, Karns singled up the middle and was driven home by
Yasmine Gonzalez. With Gonzalez on third, Ripka reached on an error that scored Gonzalez. Boyd then reached on another error, setting up
Angelina Bresnen, who grounded out to second but brought Ripka home to give the Aggies the lead.
The Pride plated one more run in the seventh, but Mayorga grounded out to Karns, who flipped the ball to Donnelly for the final out. Karns pitched a complete game, striking out six and earning her 15th win of the season—three more than her freshman total.
Game 2 | Delaware Valley 8 – Widener 0 (5 Innings)
The Aggies got on the board early, capitalizing on multiple Pride errors. Donnelly singled through the left side to score Boyd, giving DelVal a 1-0 lead in the first.
In the third, with two outs, Funston walked and Donnelly singled to put runners on.
Tori Bockrath then doubled off the left-field fence, scoring Funston. Gonzalez followed with a double of her own, driving in Donnelly and Bockrath to extend the lead to 4-0.
In the fourth, Collins walked and advanced to third on a Ripka single. Bresnen singled up the middle to bring Collins home. After Funston walked to load the bases, Donnelly doubled to the right-center fence, scoring Bresnen and Ripka for a 7-0 advantage. Gonzalez capped the scoring with an infield single to short, bringing home Funston for an 8-0 final.
Widener threatened in the fifth, loading the bases with one out, but Karns induced back-to-back popouts to end the game. Boyd earned her fifth win of the season, pitching four shutout innings.
The sweep over Widener capped a historic season for DelVal softball, setting a new program record with 21 wins.
