MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The Delaware Valley University softball team earned a split on day two of its spring break trip in Myrtle Beach. The Aggies dropped a narrow 6-5 contest to Hilbert in the first game before defeating Penn College 7-0 in the nightcap.
DelVal softball improved to 3-1 overall.
The Aggies batted first in the opener and wasted no time getting on the board as Tori Bockrath worked a two-out walk and Angelina Bresnen hit a triple to the fence in left-center to make it 1-0. Madison Donnelly came up next and scored Bresnen with a single to left field to double the lead.
The Hawks responded in the bottom of the frame with five earned runs on four hits and a walk including a three-run triple by Alana Yadov.
DelVal trailed 5-0 heading into the third when Bockrath and Bresnen combined for another run. Bockrath singled and Bresnen hit a double to deep center field to make it a 5-3 game.
First-year pitcher Alyssa Scansaroli pitched three scoreless innings and the Aggie offense took advantage in the fifth. Sierra Ripka led off with a hard-hit single to third base and came around to score when Kenzie Boyd doubled down the right-field line. Boyd tied the game at 5-5 when she dove under the catcher's tag after a ground ball to the pitcher by Bockrath.
Kaitlin Stolowski helped Hilbert retake the lead in the bottom of the fifth as she hit a lead-off single to right, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on an error to make it a 6-5 game.
DelVal threatened in the last two innings but left three runners on base and dropped their first contest of the season.
Seven different player registered a hit for the Aggies including Bresnen who went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, two RBI and a run scored. First-year Katelyn Barber picked up her first collegiate hit and Bockrath scored two runs and added an RBI with one hit and a walk. Scansaroli pitched 5.2 innings in her first college appearance and allowed one unearned run on four hits, a walk, and two strikeouts.
Hilbert was held to seven hits in the game led by Yadov's two hits and three runs batted in.
In game two, DelVal gave the ball to first-year Madison Karns to take on the Penn College Wildcats. Karns retired the side in order to start the game, and the offense put up two runs on RBIs by Bockrath and Bresnen that plated Boyd and Ripka to make it 2-0 after one.
The Aggies doubled their lead in the third when Boyd singled and stole second, then came around to score on a single by Bockrath. Three batters later Donnelly drove in Bockrath with a single back up the middle to make it 4-0 after three.
DelVal tacked on three more in the seventh thanks to a two-run double to right-center by Amelia Funston and an RBI double by Donnelly. Karns got three ground outs in the seventh and the Aggies earned the 7-0 win.
Karns earned her second consecutive complete-game shutout and allowed seven hits with three strikeouts and a walk. The offense racked up 14 hits by eight different players including three-hit efforts by Boyd and Donnelly. Bresnen and Bockrath each had two hits.
DelVal is off tomorrow before taking on Penn State Harrisburg and Lancaster Bible College on Wednesday.
