Women’s Basketball Gets Edged Out at Gwynedd Mercy

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. - The Delaware Valley women's basketball team took a small lead into the final quarter against Gwynedd Mercy but fell just short in the final 10 minutes dropping the contest 80-74 to the Griffins on Saturday afternoon.

The teams remained in lock step in the first frame, each knocking down 22 points. The Griffins outshot the Aggies from the field (9-22), but foul trouble helped DelVal to 6-of-6 shooting from the charity stripe in the frame.

The second quarter mimicked the first with the teams putting up 19 points apiece. The Aggies were the sharp shooters in the frame shooting 46.7% from the field while the Griffins shot 30.4%. The difference came from beyond the arc with Gwynedd Mercy shooting 3-of-8 with the Aggies shooting just 0-of-1.

The teams saw three lead changes through the first three minutes coming out of the half before an Alexis Wright free throw kicked off a 6-0 run for the Aggies to pull ahead by five, 51-46. The Griffins mounted a comeback evening the score twice before taking a three-point lead in the ninth minute, 57-54. Jayla Rivera knocked down a three-pointer to begin a 7-0 run through the end of the frame to give the Aggies a four-point lead, 61-57.

The final 10 minutes began with a nearly two-minute scoring drought broke by the Griffins with a 10-3 run to take the lead, 67-64. Ciana Feliciano put up four points for the Aggies to tie the game with 4:19 to play, 68-68. The Aggies would tie the score once more with a 2-of-2 effort at the line from Haley Keenan, 70-70, before Gwynedd would pull ahead indefinitely with a 10-4 run to win the game, 80-74.

Keenan led the Aggies in scoring with 27 points. Wright also tallied double-digit points putting up 22 while adding an impressive 21 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.

The Aggies return to action on the road next Friday, Nov. 22 and Saturday, Nov. 23 for the Terry Green Tip-Off Tournament at Franklin and Marshall. DelVal will kick off the tournament against Alvernia that Friday at 5 p.m.
