Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Comeback Falls Short in Game One as Aggies Lose a Pair at Wilkes

WILKES-BARRE (Pa.)--- The Delaware Valley softball team battled back from a 2-0 deficit and put the tying run 60 feet away in the seventh inning, but were unable to complete the comeback, as the Aggies lost game one at Wilkes 2-1 in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom action. The Aggies then fell to the Colonels 12-0 in five innings in game two.

GAME ONE

Wilkes (9-4, 1-2) quickly got on the scoreboard just two batters into the game after a leadoff walk and a stolen base by Hana Cross led to an RBI double by Hannah Boyd, giving the Colonels a 1-0 lead after one inning. In the bottom of the third, Cross again led off with a walk and stole second base. Boyd then reached first on an error on a bunt attempt and Cross came around to score on the error, giving Wilkes a 2-0 lead.

Both teams were kept quiet for the next three innings until the Aggies (4-12-1, 0-3) started to make some noise in the top of the seventh. Madison Donnelly and Tori Bockrath led off with back-to-back walks. After the Colonels recorded an out at third base, Olivia Rexrode drew a walk to load the bases. A popout gave the Colonels two outs before Olivia Spofford drew a bases loaded walk to trim the lead to 2-1. With two outs and the bases loaded, Wilkes got a popout to end the game and secure the win.

Kenzie Boyd pitch well in the loss, giving up just two runs over six innings on six hits while walking four and striking out one.

GAME TWO

Wilkes (10-4, 2-2-) pushed across three runs in the bottom of the first, one on an error, another on an RBI single and the third on a wild pitch to lead 3-0 after one inning.

The Colonels broke the game wide open in the bottom of the third, scoring nine runs on six hits and three errors. An RBI single and a bases loaded walk extended the lead to 5-0. An error brought home another run and a two-run single made it 8-0 Colonels. A two-run double gave the Wilkes a 10-0 lead and an error and a wild pitch brought home the final two runs.

Carly Mahal went 2-for-3 for the Aggies (4-13-1, 0-4) in game two.

DelVal will be back in action Thursday, March 30th at Penn State Brandywine for a doubleheader starting at 3PM.
