Men's Wrestling Earns Top Five Finish At Doug Parker Invite

Springfield, MA- Delaware Valley Men's Wrestling traveled all the way to Springfield, Massachusetts to take part in the 2023 Doug Parker Invite. This tournament consisted of eighteen teams from all across the northeast, including nationally ranked #9 United States Coast Guard and #14 NYU. The Aggies had a total of wrestlers compete in the tournament and finished with a total of five wrestlers finished in the top six of their weight classes.
 
The Aggies were led by Sophomore HWT Logan Flynn who took home second place. One week removed from a first place showing at the Racich Rumble, Flynn followed it up with another finals appearance in a bracket filled with multiple nationally ranked opponents. In the first round, Flynn won a close 5-3 decision over Edison Gaurcas of Rhode Island. In the quarterfinals, Flynn defeated Benjamin Katz of Springfield by a 21-8 major decision. In the semi finals, Flynn matched up against sixth seed Kevin Pandorf of USCGA. Prior to this match, Pandorf upset the third seed nationally ranked Kevin Burkhart of Wilkes in the quarterfinals. The chess match between Flynn and Pandorf went into overtime as the score was tied 1-1. With seconds remaining in the overtime period, Flynn scored off of a reshot to punch his ticket into the finals, guaranteeing a top two finish at HWT. A battle of top ten nationally ranked HWTs took place in the finals as Flynn matched up against #2 Carl DiGiorgio. After a very competitive first period. The returning NCAA qualifier was able to get the advantage over Flynn and defeat the sophomore by an 11-2 major decision.
 
Sophomore Luke Moore earned third place for the Aggies in a strong showing at 174 lbs. Moore started off the day. Moore won his first round matchup by pinfall over Andy Muzika of Penn College. In the next round, Moore picked up another win by pinfall, this time over Zach Borzio of Williams College. In the quarterfinals, the sophomore won a high scoring 10-9 match over Cam Stout of USCGA to advance to the semi finals. Luke Moore would however drop his semifinal match by pinfall to eventual tournament winner first seeded Jacob Deguire of Springfield. Moore would respond with a pinfall win over William Smith of Williams College to secure third place at 174 lbs. Second tournament in a row Luke Moore placed in the top three in his weight class and the sophomore notched a team high three pins on the day.
 
Two first year Aggies, Malik Asfour and Nick Delorenzo took home fourth place for Delaware Valley at 125 lbs and 157 lbs. Asfour started the day off with a 15-0 tech fall win over Liam Knight of Southern Maine. The first year followed up with another tech fall victory over fifth seed Connor Kerwin of Wilkes. In the quarterfinals, Malik Asfour upset the fourth seed Thomas Fischer of NYU to advance to the semi finals. Asfour would however drop his semi final match by pinfall to the eventual tournament winner first seeded Isiac Paulino of Springfield. The first year would go on to drop his 3rd place match by fall to Jack Callahan of Springfield, securing fourth place. First ever tournament placement for Malik Asfour in his collegiate career up to this point
 
Nick Delorenzo won his first round match by 11-0 major decision over Jared Swartz of Springfield. Delorenzo would follow up with another victory by major decision in the next round, this time over Liam Meeker of Trinity. In the quarterfinals, the first year would earn his third major decision victory of the tournament as he defeated fourth seeded CJ Shea of Wesleyan. Delorenzo would go on to drop his semi final match by 17-2 technical fall over eventual tournament winner first seeded Peter Kane of Williams College. The first year would end his day with a 3rd place match major decision loss to Jaryn Hartranft of Wilkes. Second top four tournament placement for Nick Delorenzo as he looks to continue his impressive freshman campaign.
 
Junior Ryan Arndt took home fifth place in a loaded 133 bracket. The 133 lb bracket at the Doug Parker Invite consisted of five returning national qualifiers and six wrestlers nationally ranked. Arndt. In the first round, Arndt defeated Botensky Bauzile of Hunter by a 12-3 major decision. In the second round, the sophomore won a close 12-8 decision over Wesley Wydick of USMMA. In the quarterfinals, Arndt dropped a 14-2 major decision to returning NCAA All-American Jake Craig of Southern Maine. Ryan Arndt would then rally off a 17-7 win over Malcolm Chrispin of Bridgewater and a then defeated nationally ranked teammate Jacob Blair by injury default. The sophomore would defeat Chris DeRosa by a score of 17-11 to earn fifth place. Arndt is currently the team leader in wins for Delaware Valley and has scored the most points in his matches out of any wrestler so far on the Delaware Valley roster.
 
The Aggies ended up finishing fifth out of eighteen teams in the team score DelVal finished the tournament with the third most wrestlers finishing in the top six of their weight class. Delaware Valley Men's Wrestling will enjoy Thanksgiving break, then will be back in action December 1st- December 2nd when they travel to York, Pennsylvania, and compete at the 2023 New Standard Corp Invite.
