Softball Stumbles In MAC Freedom Twinbill At Misericordia

DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University softball team traveled to Misericordia University for a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom double header, but came home on the wrong end of a sweep as the Cougars took the opener, 8-0, and the nightcap, 11-3.

Caitlyn Pollock led the Aggies (6-13, 2-6 MAC Freedom) in game one with two of the team's four hits. On the other side, Misericordia (13-6, 3-1 MAC Freedom) scored in every inning but the first as they posted nine hits and four earned runs off starting pitcher Olivia Monismith.

Alexa McHugh earned the win for the Cougars with two hits allowed and eight strikeouts over four innings of work. The game ended after five frames.

In game two, Misericordia posted three runs in the first inning, but was held scoreless in the second.

Senior Adina Brucie led off the top of the third for DelVal with a single and then stole second. After a single by Sierra Ripka moved Brucie to third, Pollock laid down a sacrifice bunt that put the Aggies on the board and advanced Ripka to third. Monismith and Emily Merrigan followed with consecutive RBI doubles to tie the game at 3-3. DelVal left two runners on base in the frame.

The Cougars answered in the bottom of the third with three doubles that resulted in one run and put them back on top.

Carly Mahal and Brucie each got aboard with singles for the Aggies in the top of the fourth, but could not score.

Misericordia pulled away in the bottom of the fourth with five runs on seven hits to take a 9-3 lead. Ryan Zimmerman highlighted the big inning with a two-run home run to down the left field line.

Monismith got a lead off single to start the fifth for DelVal and Bailey Smith reached on an error, but both runners were stranded after a pair of strikeouts ended the threat.

The Cougars ended the game after five innings with two more runs on two hits for the 11-3 final.

Pollock went the distance in the circle and allowed 11 earned runs on 17 hits. The Aggies had eight hits in the game including two each from seniors Brucie and Monismith who also came around to score once.

DelVal takes to the road tomorrow for a non-conference double header at Widener beginning at 4 p.m.
