HOBOKEN (Nj) – The Delaware Valley University men's wrestling team traveled to Stevens Institute of Technology for a tri-match against the host Ducks and Messiah College and came home with a 1-1 record after defeating the Falcons, 30-16, but falling to the host, 41-0.
It was the second and third dual for the Aggies in two days as DelVal defeated another MAC foe, Wilkes, last night.
The Aggies opened today's slate against the Messiah College Falcons at 125 pounds. First-year Jacob Blair earned a 15-4 major decision and sophomore 133-pounder Ryan Arndt followed with a 20-0 technical fall to get the squad out to an early 9-0 lead.
Malachi Harvey kept it going with a thrilling 13-12 decision over Asa Brunk to extend the Aggie lead to 12-0 after three bouts.
Messiah clawed back with consecutive pins at 149 and 157 to quickly tie the match at 12-12. The Falcons earned more bonus points at 165 pounds with a 15-6 major decision by Zach Needles to take the lead, 16-12.
First-year Luke Moore righted the ship for the Aggies with a big second period pin of John Sumner to put DelVal back on top, 18-16. Moore began the second period on top and never let Sumner escape. They reset once, but Moore kept him on the mat and fought hard to work him to his back for the pin.
The Aggies continued to roll the rest of the match with three more wins to close out the victory. First-year Jaden Roberts cruised to a 9-2 decision over Ryder Slayton, junior Isaiah Jonson earned a 6-1 decision over Joe Embleton, and first-year Logan Flynn closed it with a second period pin of Christian Conner for the 30-16 final.
DelVal went right back to work against the host Ducks who rank third in the country and sent out six nationally ranked wrestlers to take on the Aggies.
Stevens earned three wins by fall, two by major decision, and five by decision en route to the shutout.
DelVal will have a week off before heading to the Hershey Duals hosted by Messiah where they will wrestle Johnson & Wales, McDaniel, and Ithaca beginning at 10 a.m.
