Men's Wrestling Opens Season With Third Place Showing At Ithaca Invitational; Williams Earns First Place

ITHACA (Ny.) – The Delaware Valley University men's wrestling team opened the 2022-23 season with a third place showing at the Ithaca Invitational two-day tournament and senior heavyweight Austin Williams took home first place.

The Aggies earned 110.5 team points, led by Williams' 21, and finished third out of 10 teams. Johnson & Wales won the team title with 182.5 team points and number 22 Castleton finished second with 145. Number 12 Baldwin Wallace finished fifth with 99.5 team points.

Williams went 5-0 on the day with two wins by fall and a major decision to lead DelVal. The young Aggie lineup saw eight first-years earn the first collegiate victories including Logan Flynn, Jaden Roberts, Luke Moore, Joseph McCullough, Kamrin O`Neill, Taylor Weaver, Jacob Blair, and Sean O`Toole.

DelVal will be back in action next Saturday at the annual Racich Rumble hosted by Ursinus College.

"Overall, this was a great way to kick start our season.  We had two sets of teams competing both at the Ithaca Invite and Alvernia.  This is vital for the developmental opportunities for our guys to be able to get their hands on wrestlers outside of our wrestling room.  Ithaca was a tremendous opportunity for our team to experience a high level 2-day tournament with Top-25 teams. "It felt great to finally get back out and compete again. I had a long summer to train and fill into Heavyweight. Last season did not finish the way I wanted by any means and this year I wanted to start off strong and dominant.  The first step was winning this tournament and I felt I did a lot of good things in my wrestling.  At the same time there are areas I really need to clean up to get where I want to be at the end of the season."

 "I feel like I had a great turnout for the first college tournament of my career. I just wanted to hit the mat and let it fly for each match. This weekend definitely motivates me to continue making improvements as we go into the next tournament."
