Doylestown (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University softball team put a bow on the 2021 regular season, but did not get the result it was looking for as visiting DeSales University took both games of the doubleheader. The Bulldogs (10-14) defeated the Aggies (1-19), 11-0, in game one and, 4-2, in game two.
DelVal was hurt by errors in the opener as it committed four that led to seven unearned runs in the third inning against starting pitcher Caitlyn Pollock.
As a team, the Bulldogs had 15 hits in game one led by a 3-for-4 effort from Julianna Garvey. Three different players got a hit for the Aggies including Madison McClary's team leading 15th of the year.
The Bulldogs got things started again in the nightcap, after a scoreless first, Victoria Agnoli singled to shortstop, advanced to second on a throw and drove in two runs for the early lead, 2-0. DeSales doubled its score with two more runs in the fourth on one hit and an error, 4-0.
In the sixth, Pollock's sacrifice bunt brought Jessica Stewart home from third base to make it a three-run game, 4-1.
In the top of the seventh the Bulldogs were held without a run for the third consecutive inning. After two quick outs in the bottom of the seventh, Olivia Monismith and Stewart walked and Alexis Langenfelder brought Monismith home with a single to shortstop to make it 4-2, but that would be as close as it would get for the Green and Gold.
The ninth-seed Aggies will head to eighth-seed FDU-Florham tomorrow to open the best-of-three play-in series of the 2021 MAC Freedom Championships. The doubleheader is slated for a 3 p.m. start with game three at DelVal on Saturday afternoon, if necessary. The winner will advance to take on top-seed Stevens Institute of Technology in the conference quarterfinals.
