ERIE (Pa.) -- Sophomore
Erin Murray secured a fourth place finish at the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championship (NCWWC) Northeast Regional to qualify for the national championships while teammates
Caira Jaynes and
Bridgette Schoultz followed with fifth place showings.
Murray and Jaynes dueled for the right to go to Nationals in the 191 pound bracket, and it was Murray that got the best of her teammate this time around with a fall at 1:01 of the first period. Each wrestler dropped their first matches of the day by fall to drop into the consolation bracket where Murray needed just the one win to advance.
At 130 pounds, Schoultz needed just 69 seconds to earn a pin over Vivian Newcomer of Gannon University. It was collegiate victory number one for the sophomore and the first official victory for the Delaware Valley University women's wrestling program.
In her second match of the day, Schoultz battle Daity of New Jersey City University and needed less than a minute this time to earn her second win by fall of the afternoon. She then lost her next match to the eventual champion Lana Perez of Gannon and fell into the consolation bracket where she dropped a technical fall decision to Naomi Henry of New Jersey City University.
Needing two more wins to earn fourth place and a spot at nationals, Schoultz got a first period win by fall over Abbi Montgomery from Tiffin, but in her final bout she was pinned by Mackenzie Tayerle from Adrian to give her the fifth place finish.
It was the first showing at a regional tournament for the upstart Aggie women's wrestling program and Head Coach Leigh Jaynes and Murray becomes the first national qualifier in team history.
