Jones Wins Weight Throw To Lead Women's Indoor Track At Season Opener

READING (Pa.) – First-year student-athletes Kait Jones and Kerrin Long finished earned top-3 finishes and the women's 4x200-meter relay team took home top honors as the Delaware Valley University women's indoor track and field team impressed in its 2021 season opener at the Golden Wolves Rust Buster hosted by Alvernia University.

Jones was strong in her first collegiate weight throw competition. She fouled on her first attempt, but got progressively better over the next five throws. In her fifth and final go, Jones reached 11.44 meters (37'6.5") to take home the gold.

Fellow first-year Kerrin Long took home third with her mark of 10.14 meters (33' 3.25"). She reached her furthest mark on her third attempt after reaching just 7.9 meters on the first throw. Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) member Eastern had the second place finisher in junior Brigitte Smith and her mark of 11.28 meters.

The Aggies were one of two teams to compete in the women's 4x200-meter relay and took home the top mark over another MAC foe, Arcadia. DelVal went with Grace Kane, Vanessa Dohoney, Kelly Hastings, and anchor Alysia Joseph. The quartet finished over six seconds better than its competition with a time of 1:55.33.

Joseph, a first-year, also impressed in the 400-meter run with a second place showing. The field of five was all MAC competitors and Joseph's mark of 1:07.24 was just over a second off the first place finisher from King's College.

In a crowded field of 20 student-athletes at the women's 200-meter, DelVal's Hastings took home fifth overall with a time of 28.64 seconds. Dohoney finished 16th in her first collegiate event with a time of 31.09 seconds.

In the women's 1-mile run, Alyssa Blackmon finished fifth out of seven competitors with a mark of 5:59.23.

Jones and Long each punched their tickets to the conference championships with their performances in the women's weight throw event.
