MADISON (Nj.) – The Delaware Valley University women's basketball team opened Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom play at FDU-Florham on Wednesday night, but came home on the wrong end of a 61-47 decision.
Each team started slow in the first quarter as the Devils (1-6) held a narrow, 7-6, lead over the Aggies (3-4) going into the second.
The Aggies turned the tide in the second and outscored FDU, 15-14, to tie the game at 21 apiece at the halftime break. Senior Lauren Moretti led DelVal with nine points in the quarter, including a stretch of five in a row.
Out of the break, each team connected on from beyond the arc before the Aggies went on an 8-2 run to take their largest lead of the game at 32-26 with just under five minutes to play in the third. The Devils clawed back with a 10-6 spurt to cut DelVal's lead to two, 38-36, heading into the fourth.
FDU continued its run with the first six points of the fourth, but the Aggies answered with a 3-pointer from Ajah Kellam to tie the game at 41-41. Kellam's bucket spurred a 9-0 run for DelVal and put them up by six with 5:27 left in regulation.
The rest of the way, the Aggies went 0-for-7 from the field and turned the ball over five times as the Devils closed the game with a 20-0 run to pull away with the victory.
DelVal shot less than 25-percent from the field and turned the ball over 23 times for the game. Moretti led the way with 15 points and 12 rebounds and Haley Keenan recorded another double-double with 12 boards and 11 points to go with six steals and three assists. Six other players cracked the score sheet for the Aggies.
FDU shot a tick over 30-percent and turned the ball over 20 times in the contest. Five different players scored in double figures including Tamyah Jones and Jade-Dee Tolentino who each had 13. Cassidy Miller pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds and had three steals.
The women's hoops teams will look to bounce-back with another road conference contest on Saturday at Misericordia. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
