Final Game Of Spring Break Ends In Heartbreak Fashion For Softball

CLERMONT (Fl.) -- The Delaware Valley University softball team trailed 5-4 going into the seventh inning but was outscored, 6-5, by Penn State Altoona in a wild final frame that saw the Lions come away with an 11-9 victory as they held off a late charge by the Aggies.

Errors in the first inning haunted DelVal (1-9) as Penn State Altoona put up three unearned runs on two Aggie errors.

DelVal was hitless until the third inning when Caitlin Pollock laced a single to center that moved Adina Brucie, who was aboard with a walk, over to second. Faith Sleva laid down a bunt and was safe at first on an error and Brucie came around to score on the errant throw. Jessica Stewart came up next and brought home Pollock with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-2.

The Lions got the runs right back in the next half inning thanks to a two-run home run to left by Brooke Colledge.

Stewart got DelVal back to within one a two-RBI single to left that plated Pollock and Sleva. It was still a one-run game in the seventh when Penn State Altoona exploded for six runs on six hits and an error. Olivia Miller highlighted the frame with a two-run home and Kristin Hewitt picked up two RBIs with a single and the Aggies went into the bottom of the seventh down, 11-4.

DelVal fought back with five runs in the final half inning, and had the winning run at the plate with two outs, but a caught stolen at second bases ended the contest.

Three different players had multiple hits for the Aggies including Pollock who led the way with three hits, two runs scored, and one RBI. Stewart was 2-for-3 with three runs batted in. Joanna Kondroski pitched 6.2 innings with seven runs allowed, only four earned, on eight hits and four walks.
