WILLIAMSPORT (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University wrestling team finished sixth at the 2020 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) wrestling championships as it accumulated 32 team points.
Senior
Kordell Rush led the squad with a third place finish in the 133 pound bracket. Rush entered the tournament a perfect 21-0 and ranked third in division III. He won his first two matches with a 17-2 tech. fall and an 11-0 major decision.
In the semi-final match against Hunter Gutierrez, he suffered his first loss of the year in a 4-2 decision. Rush trailed 4-0 in the final minute of the third period after giving up two takedowns. He got a takedown of his own to make it 4-2 with 37 seconds left, but it wasn't enough and he dropped into the consolation bracket.
In the consolations, Rush defeated Jack Bauer of Wilkes with a 6-2 decision and then faced Josiah Gehr of Messiah and came away with a 5-3 decision to earn the third place finish.
Sophomore transfer
Youssef Ait Boulahri dropped his first match of the day in the 285 pound bracket, but battled through the consolations with two wins to advance to the third place match. He took down Angelo Moore of Alvernia with a second period pin and then earned a 7-4 decision over Carter Urich of Messiah. In the third place bout, Ait Boulahri battled Jacob Estevez of Lycoming into overtime with score tied, 3-3. With just 34 seconds left in the OT period, Estevez got a takedown to secure the win, and Ait Boulahri finished in fourth place.
Austin Williams and
Kyle Hillermeier each competed in the 184 pound bracket. Williams won his first match with an early second period pin over Dawson Tallant of Wilkes, but Hillermeier dropped a 3-1 decision in his first match. The teammates then met each other in the consolation bracket and the sophomore Hillermeier got the best of the freshman Williams as he picked up a first period fall to advance. In his next match, Hillermeier's tournament came to a close when he dropped an 11-6 decision to Mason Novak of Lycoming.
Patrick O'Neill and
Jake Nase went 0-2 at 157 and 174 pounds, respectively.
Stevens Tech finished first overall with a team score of 154 points and Messiah followed with 145.5 points.
