ROANOKE (Va.) — Delaware Valley University fresham 133-pounder
Russell Benson saw his season come to an end after two matches at the 2018 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships.
Benson finished third at the Southeast Regionals two weeks ago with four wins and one loss to become the lone Aggie to qualify for the national tournament.
In the first match today, Benson was matched up against second seeded Sam Bennyhoff of Augsburg. The senior Auggie was the national runner-up a year ago, and he got out to a quick lead on Benson with two points in the first and another nine in the second. He led 13-0 in the third before pinning the DelVal rookie 34 seconds into the final frame.
That loss dropped Benson into a pigtail match against junior Owen Doster from Wabash. Benson fell into another early hole, surrendering 10 points in the first period. Early in the second period, Doster got Benson to his back for the third time in the match and completed the fall at the 3:28 mark of the match to eliminate Benson from the tournament.
Benson's season concluded with a 20-11 record, a third place finish at regionals, and a berth to the NCAA Championships.
