DOYELSTOWN (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University softball team earned its first doubleheader sweep of the season with a pair of home victories of Centenary University on Tuesday afternoon. The Aggies took game one, 6-1, and won the night cap, 7-6.
DelVal opened up a 3-0 lead in the second inning of game one after freshman
Caitlyn Pollock got things started with a triple to right-center field. Fellow rookie
Olivia Monismith drover her in with a single through the left side for the first run of the day. Later in the frame,
Jamie Stefani drove in two runs with a bases loaded single.
The Aggies gave the ball to Stefani to start game one in the circle and the senior held the Cyclones to just one hit through six innings of play. Centenary scored its lone run of the game in the sixth inning off of two DelVal errors.
The Aggies capitalized on three Cyclone errors in the third inning to score twice more, and
Caitlin Stoner drove in
Maddy O'Donohue in the sixth to round out the scoring and secure the 6-1 win.
Stefani earned her second win of the season by striking out nine batters, walking one, and allowing three hits. At the dish she went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored while O'Donohue and Monismith each picked up two hits and came around to score once. Six different players scored in total for DelVal and it had 10 hits as a team.
Jessica Hewiit went the distance in the circle for Centenary and gave up four earned runs while walking three batters.
Monismith got the start in game two and the Cyclones got to her for four runs on five hits in the first inning.
The Aggies answered right back in the second with four runs of their own to tie the game at 4-4. Four of the first five batters worked a walk and Monismith knocked a single. Later in the inning, with runners on second and third,
Morgan Hawk delivered a single to left center to knot the score.
Each squad managed just two hits through the next three innings and the game remained tied going into the sixth. In the top of the frame, Centenary put up two runs on two hits and an error to take a 6-4 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth,
Faith Sleva and
Adina Brucie led off with back-to-back singles and O'Donohue tied the game with one swing of the bat as she laced a triple to the gap in right-center field. The next three batters walked to bring in the game-winning run just before darkness fell and the game was called after six innings giving DelVal the 7-6 triumph.
Brucie, O'Donohue, and Monismith all had two hits in the win and O'Donohue led the way with three RBIs. Monismith went four innings giving up six hits and four earned runs while striking out three.
Julie Burns finished the game and earned the win with two innings pitched and two earned runs allowed on three hits.
