DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University wrestling team took to its home mat for the first time in the 2019-20 campaign as it welcomed Wilkes University and York College in for a tri-match, but the home squad dropped both decisions.
The Aggies took on the Colonels in the first match and fell, 28-19.
Kordell Rush came into the match ranked second in Division III at his weight class and remained perfect on the year as he earned an 8-0 major decision over Nick Bauer at 133 pounds. He used three takedowns to get there.
Evan Widing followed with a hard-fought, 5-4, decision at 157 pounds. The freshman trailed by two after two periods by got two reversals in the third to pull to a tie at 4-4. He out-wrestled his opponent Cody Dix and had the riding time to earn the decision.
The Aggies lost the next three matches, but won two of the final three by fall.
Nick Bord dominated his opponent Dawson Tallant and earned the fall at 5:44. At heavyweight,
Youssef Ait Boulahri held a 5-2 lead after the first period and pinned Roger Horton 44 seconds into the second for the fall and the 28-19 final.
The Spartans bested Wilkes, 26-9, before taking down DelVal, 27-20. Freshman
John Richter lost by tech. fall at 125 pounds but Rush countered with a first period pin of Logan Fox to put the Aggies up in the match, 6-5. DelVal had to forfeit the next weight class before sending out the freshman Widing at 149 pounds.
Widing got an early takedown, and another later in the first, to take a 4-1 lead into the second. Widing scored four more in the second and another five in the third for his second win of the day by a 13-2 major decision.
Justin Whitacre fell by tech. fall at 157 pounds and Alec Myers lost by a 10-2 major decision at 165 pounds. At 174 pounds, Jackson Drum bested DelVal's
Kyle Hillermeier, 6-0.
At 184 pounds,
Nick Bord got an escape and a takedown in the first period and held a 3-2 lead into the second. He took his opponent down three more times the rest of the way and earned a commanding, 14-4 major decision for his second win of the day.
Austin Williams took to the mat for the Aggies at 197 pounds and gave up an early takedown to fall into a 2-0 hole after one period and could not climb back as he dropped a 14-2 major decision.
Ait Boulahri was strong in his second match of the day as he held a lead of 6-0 after the first thanks to a near fall and back points. Another takedown in the second gave him an eight-point advantage and he finished the match with a pin at 4:50 for the 27-20 final.
