DelVal Softball Falls Twice To Arcadia To Wrap Up Season

DOYLESTOWN (PA) – The Delaware Valley University softball team concluded its 2018 season with a pair of non-conference losses to visiting Arcadia University, 2-1 and 10-0, on Tuesday.

The Knights, who will be the top seed in this weekend's Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Commonwealth tournament, improved their overall record to 24-12. The Aggies finished the year with a 14-18 mark.

Game one was a pitcher's duel between DelVal's Jamie Stefani and Arcadia University's Mary Pat Murray. Both allowed just one run through the first six innings and they came in the third inning. The Knights got their tally as Amanda Hess had a leadoff single and eventually scored on a sacrifice by Jackie Bilotti.

The Aggies answered in their half of the third as Maddy O'Donohue had an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error. Koirama Dudley moved her over to third with a sacrifice bunt and Stefani doubled to left field to plate O'Donohue.

It stayed 1-1 until the seventh when Arcadia's Nicole Iasiello reached second on a two-base fielding error following a 12-pitch at-bat. She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and, following a strikeout, scored on an RBI single to right by Hess. That was enough for Murray as she retired DelVal in order in the seventh. She allowed just the one unearned run and seven hits while striking out seven.

Stefani took the loss despite permitting just one earned run and five hits over seven innings. She fanned eight and, in the process, broke her own single-season record for strikeouts as she upped her total to 116. Stefani also went 2-for-3 at the plate while O'Donohue was 2-for-4.

In the nightcap, craziness ensued in the top of the first as Hunter Schantz hit what looked to be a two-run homer for Arcadia. However, the runner in front of her was ruled to have missed third base and she was called out to end the inning. Despite this, the umpires ruled that Schantz's run counted for a 1-0 lead.

Schantz wasn't done as she came up with the bases loaded in the third and smashed a grand slam over the center field fence. She added a run-scoring double in the fourth to highlight a two-run stanza and her teammates added three more in the fifth. Schantz finished 3-for-3 with a double, two home runs and six RBIs. Kylee Schwind hurled a one-hit shutout with four strikeouts.

DelVal's lone hit was a single by Dudley in the first. Dudley, the team's lone senior playing in her final collegiate game, went 1-2 and also had three putouts at shortstop.
