DOYLESTOWN (PA) –
Gina Formisano and
Julie Burns had walk-off singles as Delaware Valley University scored a combined eight runs in the seventh innings to pull off a miraculous doubleheader sweep of Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom foe Wilkes University, 7-6 and 6-5.
The games were actually the first home contests for the Aggies, who have had numerous postponements with the crazy spring weather. The sweep improved their record to 9-5 overall, 3-1 and second place in the MAC Freedom. The Lady Colonels, a conference playoff participant a season ago, fell to 14-8 and 4-4.
DelVal trailed 6-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh. Following an out, pinch-hitter
Mikayla Gallagher singled and Koirama Dudley reached on an error. Two-time all-conference honoree
Jamie Stefani was then "unintentionally" walked for the third time in the game which loaded the bases.
Caitlin Stoner reached on an error and two runs scored on the play, but Stefani was thrown out for the second out of the inning.
Morgan Hawk then doubled to right-center and Stoner advanced to third. That brought up Burns and she laced a triple to right field to tie the game. Formisano was next and she lined the ball over the shortstop's head for a base hit that scored Burns for the 7-6 thriller.
Wilkes led 3-0 in the early going before the Aggies got one back in the fourth on an RBI by Stoner. The Lady Colonels, behind a two-run single Sydney Cogswell, added three in fifth before Stoner got another RBI in the sixth. That set up the seventh-inning dramatics, the first of the day.
Burns and Stoner drove in two runs apiece while Formisano's walk-off was her lone hit and RBI of the contest. Stefani picked up the win as she allowed just four earned run over seven innings and struck out seven. Cogswell and Britny Jumalon combined for five RBIs for Wilkes. Christina Gambino took the loss despite allowing just one earned run in six-plus innings.
Game two saw the Lady Colonels rally from a 3-1 deficit as they scored three runs in the fifth, including RBI doubles by Gambino and Haley Welker. They then added an insurance run in the top of the seventh thanks to a run-scoring single by Welker.
After an out to start the bottom of the seventh, DelVal got the tying run on base when Maddie O'Donohue singled to left. Dudley doubled down the right field line to put runners in scoring position. Wilkes did not throw a pitch close to Stefani as she walked for a third time in the game and sixth time for the day.
Stoner struck out swinging for the second out of the inning.
Morgan Hawk hit a shot to second base that was booted for an error and both O'Donohue and Dudley scored to tie the game and Stefani moved up to second. Burn then drove a 2-2 pitch to deep right field and Stefani came around the score for another walk-off win.
DelVal got its first three runs of the game in the fourth thanks to an RBI double by Burns and run-scoring singles by Formisano and
Kayla Keller.
Burns finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs. She also started on the mound and did not allow an earned run in five innings of worked. Stefani pitched the final two and picked up the win. O'Donohue had a 2-for-4 showing.
For Wilkes, Welker was 4-for-4 with two RBI. Celine Podlesney went the distance and allowed just two runs while striking out six, but took the loss.
The Aggies will host Marywood University for a non-conference doubleheader on Monday, April 8 (3 p.m.).
