DelVal Wrestlers Honor Seniors, Fall To No. 18 Centenary

DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley University celebrated its Senior Night, but it was 18th-ranked Centenary University that registered five pins, en route to a 33-14 victory.

The Cyclones improved to 9-2 in dual meets and it was also the 100th win for head coach John Garriques. The Aggies fell to 7-9 and they will end their dual meet season at No. 19 The College of New Jersey on Friday, February 9 (7 p.m.).

DelVal honored seniors Tim Ambacher, Shawn Phillips, Brandon Rudy and Brenden Velez in a pre-match ceremony (fellow senior Marc Isaac was too ill to attend). The Aggies then got off to a great start as a decision and a technical fall in the first two weights gave them an 8-0 lead.

At 125, Kordell Rush built a 7-0 lead and was close to a pin before the second period ended. He then cruised to an 8-2 triumph over Tyreek Stanton to improve to 16- 9 on the season.

Velez then hit the mat at 133 and used two, four-point near falls, two takedowns, a two-point near fall, an escape and riding time for the 16-0 technical fall victory over Bobby Demeter. It was the 75th career win for Velez, including 20 this season (20-13) for the two-time national qualifier.

The battle of nationally-ranked wrestlers then took place at 141 as Ambacher, 18-5 and ranked eighth, took on No. 7 Max Nauta (13-3). After a scoreless first, Nauta picked up an early reversal in the second and then earned a pin with 55 seconds left in the period to make it an 8-6 match.

Centenary's sent another ranked wrestler out at 149 and 10th-ranked Christopher Muce pinned Devin Nole in 4:27 to give the Cyclones the lead for good at 12-8. DelVal cut that deficit to one after Anthony Snyder (12-14) led throughout and notched a 9-6 decision over Tom Hinz at 157.

However, the Cyclones took three of the final four weights, including three falls, for the 33-14. Alec Donovan started the spurt with a pin in 4:11 over Chris Richardson at 165 pounds and Jordan Juliano followed with a 7-4 decision at 174.

At 184, the Aggies' Nicholas Bord led throughout the match, but a reversal by Jeremy Nurnberger with nine seconds left forced overtime. It was Bord that registered the takedown with 31 seconds to go in the first extra session for the 8-6 win that improved his record to 6-4 on the year.

Centenary's Etini Udott dropped Carlos Martinez 83 seconds into their 197-pound battle and Anthony Colabella pinned Oscar Daniels with 26 seconds left at heavyweight.
