YORK (PA) – Delaware Valley University dominated the 133-pound bracket at the New Standard Corporation Invitational at York College with two of the top-3 finishers including champion
Kordell Rush and third place finisher
Russell Benson. The Aggies tied for 12
th in the team standings with 40.5 points.
Johnson & Wales won the tournament for the third time with 154.5 points and three champions.
Rush came into this weekend ranked fourth in the Division III at 133 pounds and earned his second tournament crown this season after defeating eighth-ranked Ricky Cavallo in the final bout. It was a hard fought bought between Rush and Cavallo but the junior team captain came out on top of the 4-3 decision.
Rush started his day with a 15-3 major decision over Kolin Johnson of Apprentice School, and earned a 3-0 decision over Eli Sims of Brockport in the semi-finals to advance to the championship match where he met Cavallo.
Battling with Rush in the 133-pound bracket was Rush's teammate Benson. Benson won two matches yesterday to reach today's quarterfinals, but fell into the consolation bracket after dropping a 7-2 decision to Tito Colom of Ithaca. Benson went on to win four straight matches to claim third place. In the consolation semi's, Benson pinned Sims, who was coming off his loss to Rush, and that set up a rematch between Benson and Colom for the third place title. Colom was forced to forfeit the match, and Benson was given third.
Heavyweight
Oscar Daniels was the third Aggie still in the hunt for a championship on Saturday, but a 7-5 loss to Tommy Wrzesien of Johnson & Wales dropped him into the consolation bracket. Daniels won his next match with a second period pin of Peter Corapasso from Apprentice School, but he fell to William McGinley of Ursinus, 12-9, in his next bout.
