DOYLESTOWN (PA) – It came down to the final two weight classes, but The Delaware Valley University wrestling team came out on the losing end of a 21-14 decision against Division II Millersville University in its home opener on Saturday afternoon.
The Aggies fell to 1-1 overall after the first week of competition in which it downed Penn College of Technology on Thursday night, while the Marauders moved to 1-0.
The first match of the day was at 125 pounds and Millersville's Connor Sheehan used four late back points to earn an 11-7 decision over freshman
Nick DeRosa.
DelVal countered by winning the next two matches including a hard fought battle at 133 by another freshman,
Russell Benson. Benson earned a 4-3 victory thanks to a third period escape and riding time. Returning national qualifier
Kordell Rush cruised to a 20-4 technical fall victory that took 5:47 and gave the Aggies an 8-3 advantage.
The Marauders took the lead after Douglas Mele got an 8-5 decision over
Rob Duxbury at 149 and Robert Saum stole a 13-5 major decision from
Chris Richardson at 157 to make it a 10-8 match.
Senior team captain
Anthony Snyder put DelVal back on top, 11-10, with a 6-2 decision, at 165 pounds, over Anthony Yacovetti.
At 175 pounds, sophomore
Anthony Costanza battled into overtime with Reece Muldoon, but it was Muldoon that got the takedown 15 seconds into the extra stanza to earn the decision and put the Marauders up by two points.
Aggies' freshman
Nick Bord kept DelVal in the match at 184 pounds with a 5-0 decision over Ryan Kokawski, but Millersville sent its senior Colton Dull to the Matt at 197 pounds and his 16-1 technical fall gave the Marauders a four point lead heading into the final match.
At heavyweight, senior David Wuestner took care of DelVal's
Oscar Daniels with a 6-3 decision to send Millersville home with the 21-14 match victory.
The Aggies will be back in action one week from today at the Ursinus Fall Brawl beginning at 9 a.m.
