DelVal Wrestling Battles At Navy Classic

ANNAPOLIS (MD) – The Delaware Valley University wrestling team took on a tall task as it was the lone Division III school to compete at the Navy Classic on Saturday and the Aggies finished 16th out 16 in team scoring.

DelVal traditionally enters the Navy Classic knowing it's competitive field comprised of mostly Division I schools, but it always take on the challenge as a primer to the rest of the season ahead.

Two Aggies advanced out of the round of 32 with victories. Freshman Russell Benson picked up a 5-1 victory over Richi gomez of Edinboro in the 133-pound bracket, but fell to Noah Gonser of Campbell by fall at 1:59. Nationally ranked junior Kordell Rush lost his first match, 3-1, to Cody Trybus of Navy and then was upended, 4-3, by Hunter Kosco of Brown University in the consolation bracket.

Fellow rookie Dan Colon entered the 157-pound bracket and got a first round pin at 5:08 over Elijah Murphy from American University. He advanced to the second round but was pinned by Hunter Willits from Oregon State University at the 3:33 mark.

DelVal earned four team points on the day. Michigan State University ran away with the tournament with 126 team points.

The Aggies will compete again in two weeks at the two-day York College Invitational beginning on Friday, November 30.
