DelVal Wrestlers Post 1-3 Mark At North/South Duals

COLLEGEVILLE (PA) – The Delaware Valley University wrestling team compiled a 1-3 mark while wrestling at the North/South Duals at Ursinus College on Saturday. The Aggies defeated Division II Shippensburg University, but dropped decisions to 10th-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology (25-12), 14th-ranked Messiah College (35-9) and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (30-16).

Saturday's action moved DelVal's dual meet record to 4-5 on the season.

Kordell Rush went a perfect 4-0 for the Aggies at 125 pounds thanks to a technical fall, two major decisions and a decision. Returning national qualifier and 10th-ranked Tim Ambacher won three of four matches, including one pin. His lone setback was a tough 7-4 decision to fourth-ranked Brett Kaliner of Stevens.

Eliias Vega went 3-1 while splitting time at 174/184 pounds and Marc Isaac won both his matches at heavyweight, his first action of the season after starring on defense for the DelVal football team that went to the quarterfinals.

Rush gave the Aggies the early lead against Stevens with a 17-0 technical fall over Mike Heck. However, the Ducks won the next five weight classes before Vega took a 15-5 major decision over Zach Kovacs at 174. Stevens came back with a pair of triumphs before Isaac ended it with a 6-3 decision over Joe Moreno.

DelVal next faced Shippensburg and defeated its Division II foe for the 12th time in 13 career meetings. The Aggies built an 11-0 lead thanks to major decisions by Rush and Ambacher with a Brenden Velez triumph sandwiched in-between at 133.

The Raiders cut the match to 11-10 with a pin and major in the next two weights, but DelVal came back with three straight wins as a technical fall by Anthony Snyder and decisions by Anthony Costanza and Vega upped the Aggie advantage to 22-10. Shippensburg won the last two weights, but it wasn't enough as DelVal picked up the win.

Next up was a match against Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) foe Messiah and the Aggies used wins by Rush and Ambacher to build a 6-3 lead after three weights. From there, the Falcons won six of the next seven with DelVal's lone triumph coming from Vega at 174 pounds.

Rush (major), Velez (decision) and Ambacher (fall) gave the Aggies a 13-0 advantage over Merchant Marine. However, Merchant Marine picked up 20 points over the following six weights for a seven-point lead. Isaac got three back with a 5-3 decision over Brandon Joest, but it wasn't enough.

DelVal will return to action next Sunday, January 14 when it travels to Riverdale, New York for a tri-match at the College of Mount Saint Vincent. The Aggies will open with Hunter College before taking on the home squad.
