Aggie Wrestlers Split Sunday Action

RIVERDALE (NY) – The Delaware Valley University wrestling team split a pair of matches at the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Sunday. The Aggies were edged by New York University, 26-25, before bouncing back with a 39-18 triumph over the host Dolphins.

The split moved DelVal's dual meet record to 5-6 on the season.

The Aggies picked up points in just two of the first six weight classes against New York University and they trailed 23-7. The victories were an 11-2 major decision by Brenden Velez at 133 pounds and a 13-7 decision for Shawn Phillips at 157 pounds.

A pin by Eliias Vega at 174 pounds and a forfeit victory to David Furmato at 184 cut the DelVal deficit to four. New York University put the match away with a 7-0 decision at 197 and the Aggies' got their six remaining points at heavyweight as Marc Isaac was awarded a forfeit.

DelVal then found itself down 18-6 to Mount Saint Vincent after four weights as it gave up a two forfeits and a pin. Velez was awarded a forfeit for the Aggies' six points.

However, DelVal registered 33 points over the final six weight classes thanks to two forfeits, two pins, a technical fall and a major decision. Phillips got it going with a 16-1 technical fall while Richardson followed with a 13-4 major decision.

Vega gave the Aggies the lead for good at 21-18 with his second pin of the day. Furmato and Horvath picked up forfeits wins at 184 and 197 respectively while Isaac pinned his foe at heavyweight for the 39-18 final.

DelVal will compete at the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Championships at King's College next Saturday, January 20.
