Aggie Wrestlers Split Home Tri-Match

DOYLESTOWN (PA) – The Delaware Valley University wrestling team split a home tri-match on Saturday morning as the Aggies registered a 37-15 win over Temple University and dropped a 25-23 decision to Camden County College.

DelVal moved its dual meet record to 8-8 with the split. The Aggies have remaining dual meets at Centenary College on Thursday, February 9 and at home against The College of New Jersey the next evening.

In the opening match against Temple, which returned to the wrestling circuit as a club sport in 2014-15 and is now NAIA affiliated, the Aggies registered three pins, two forfeits, a major decision and a decision for their seven wins.

After Brenden Velez and Kordell Rush received forfeit wins at 125 and 133 pounds respectively, third-ranked Tim Ambacher hit the mat at 141 and needed just 1:57 to drop Dan Rodriguez to give DelVal an 18-0 lead. Ryan Kemmerer picked up the first points for the Owls with a forfeit win at 149.

The Aggies ran the score to 28-6 with back-to-back bonus wins at 157 and 165 pounds respectively. At 165, Sekou Harris used two takedowns, a near fall, an escape and riding time to earn a 10-0 major decision over Federic Elhelou. Anthony Snyder followed with an early takedown before pinning Otto Keisker in just 99 seconds.

Temple won two of the next three weight classes as Eric Mongiello pinned Steve Horvath 1:34 into their 174-pound match-up, and Ernie Tessein picked up a 5-2 decision over David Furmato at 197 pounds. Sandwiched in-between was returning national qualifier Ben Schweiger for DelVal and the senior 184-pounder build a 4-2 lead before Kody Lupfer tied it up in the second period. Schweiger escaped with 12 seconds left in the second and then rode Lupfer for the entire two-minute third period for a 6-4 victory.

Defending national champion and three-time All-American Zach Roseberry completed the match for the Aggies by pinning Eric An just 49 seconds into the second period (3:39). Roseberry had built a 16-3 advantage before getting An's shoulders on the mat.

DelVal then jumped out to a 14-0 lead after three weights against Camden County. Velez racked up 19 points in the first period for a technical fall shutout over David Harris-Norton. Rush then pinned Joe Talarowski with seven seconds left in the opening period. Ambacher had two takedowns, an escape, a penalty point and riding time for a 7-2 triumph over Jarrett Ziegler.

However, Camden County notched a technical fall, an overtime decision and back-to-back pins over the next four weights to take a 20-14 advantage. Chaz Bramble had a 23-5 technical fall victory over Nick Ottum at 149 while Harris and Dominic Demarco went to overtime tied at 1-1 in their 157-pound match. Demarco got a takedown and a four-point near fall for the 7-1 win. Cliff Adams then dropped Snyder in 40 seconds at 165 pounds and Michael Morris pinned Horvath in 2:36 at 174.

Schweiger led throughout his 184-pound match-up, en route to a 10-3 decision over Daishi Goto to pull the Aggies to within three. However, Camden County clinched the win at 197 when Dymere Rappa earned a 23-5, technical fall win over Furmato.

Roseberry continued his dominance as he was winning 7-1 before he pinned Samer Younes with 14 seconds left in the second period (4:46). That upped Roseberry's season record to 32-0 and it was also his 52nd consecutive victory dating back to November of 2015. With 125 career wins (125-12), Roseberry is just four shy of tying DelVal's all-time mark held by 2010 graduate Kyle Bilquist.
