HARRISBURG (PA) – The middle two quarters proved to be the difference as Penn State Harrisburg posted a 62-47, non-conference victory over visiting Delaware Valley University on Tuesday.
The result left both teams with a 2-6 overall record.
The Aggies trailed by just one, 12-11, after the opening 10 minutes. It was still a one-point game with 3:07 left in the first half as a
Monika Smallwood putback made it 18-17. However, the Lions went on an 11-0 run to close the stanza for a 12-point lead.
Penn State Harrisburg continued its run by scoring the first four points of the third quarter before an
Ashley Smink layup with 6:56 left broke the DelVal drought. The Lions eventually outscored the Aggies, 19-12, in the third for a 48-29 advantage.
DelVal had an 18-14 scoring edge in the fourth, but never got closer than 15 points until a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Both teams struggled shooting from the field as neither squad was over the 38 percent mark and they combined to go just 11-for-51 from 3-point land. The difference was bench scoring as Penn State Harrisburg got more than half of its points (37) from its reserves while the Aggies had 13 points from their bench.
Smallwood led DelVal with 14 points on 6-for-9 shooting. Smink finished with 12 points and five steals.
Camryn Shaw had six points and three rebounds in 13 minutes off the bench.
Shanique Mattis came off the pine to score a game-high 17 points for the Lions. Tessa Dolce added 13 points and six rebounds while Janel Brown and Briana Davis combined for 16 points and 18 boards.
The Aggies will host The College of New Jersey for a non-conference game on Saturday, December 16 (1 p.m.).
