GALLOWAY (NJ) – The Delaware Valley University women's basketball team picked up its first win of the season as the Aggies notched a 70-63 triumph over Morrisville State College in the consolation game of the Stockton University Tip-Off Tournament.
The result moved both team's record to 1-2 on the young campaign.
DelVal led by just one, 50-49, going into the fourth quarter but it outscored the Mustangs, 20-14, over those final 10 minutes. Morrisville gained a one-point lead after Marissa Woodard sank a pair of free throws 43 seconds into the quarter.
From there, the Aggies went on a 17-6 spurt to take command. The run began with a jumper by
Olivia Gorman while
Danielle Skedzielewski drilled a 3-pointer and
Lauren Moretti followed with a layup for seven straight points. Skedzielewski added four more points over the run while
Monika Smallwood had three,
Camryn Shaw had two and Moretti hit a free throw for a 67-56 advantage with 1:49 left.
Morrisville State scored the next five points to make it a two-possession game with just under a minute left to play, but three straight free throws from Skedzielewski sealed the win for DelVal.
Neither team had a lead larger than three points in the opening quarter as they were tied at 14-14. The Aggies went up four early in the second before a 10-0 run gave the Mustangs the lead. Morrisville State eventually took a 43-43 advantage into the intermission.
The Mustangs increased their lead to four midway through the third quarter when DelVal scored 10 of the game's next 11 points for a 50-45 lead. Smallwood had four of the 10 for the Aggies, who eventually pulled away in the fourth for the victory.
DelVal, which shot 50 percent from the field in the decisive fourth, shout just under 40 percent (39.4%) for the game, compared to 34.4 percent shooting by the Mustangs. The Aggies also turned the ball over seven less times.
Smallwood was 7-for-10 from the field and finished with a career-high 15 points. The junior also led the way on the boards with 10. Skedzielewski scored 15 points while
Ashley Smink added 13 points. Gorman, a freshman, was named to the all-tournament as had 12 points, nine rebounds and six assists in the consolation game and 12 points and eight boards on Friday night.
Haley Kilmartin scored 18 points for Morrisville State while Woodard has 16 points and 18 rebounds.
DelVal will have its home opener on Tuesday, November 21 (6 p.m.) when it takes on Rosemont College.
