Ambacher Knocks Off Defending National Champion As DelVal Wrestlers Compete At North/South Duals

COLLEGEVILLE (PA) – Facing a trio of nationally-ranked Division III teams and a regionally-ranked Division II squad, the 14th-ranked Delaware Valley University wrestling team had its hands full at the North/South Duals on Saturday. The Aggies came away with a 28-21 victory over Division II Shippensburg University and dropped decisions to No. 9 Stevens Institute of Technology (30-10), No. 11 Messiah College (26-19) and No. 16 Wilkes University (25-13).

Saturday's results moved DelVal's dual meet record to 5-5 on the season.

Tim Ambacher had the win of the day for the Aggies as the junior 141-pounder put his number four national ranking on the line against top-ranked and defending national champion Matthew Grossman of Wilkes. After a scoreless first, Grossman picked up three of the four points in the second period. Ambacher began the third with an escape and followed with a takedown as he had Grossman on his back. He picked up four points for the near-fall for an 8-3 lead. Ambacher finished with a 9-5 decision and the biggest victory of his collegiate career.

Ambacher went 4-0 on the day with two other decisions and a major decision to remain undefeated against Division III wrestlers this season (18-3 overall).

Defending national champion and top-ranked heavyweight Zach Roseberry also had a 4-0 day to up his consecutive winning streak to 43, a run that dates back to early November of last season. The senior had a two decisions, a major decision and a forfeit victory to improve to 23-0 on the season. Roseberry also moved into sixth place on the school's career victory list with 116. He is now just 13 triumphs shy of tying the all-time mark.

Shippensburg entered the North/South Duals ranked eighth in the Division II Super Region I rankings and the Raiders built a 15-7 lead over the Aggies halfway through their match. DelVal's points came on a 5-3 decision by nationally-ranked Kordell Rush (10th at 125) at 133 and Ambacher's major at 141. DelVal received a pair of forfeits at 165 and 184 while seventh-ranked Ben Schweiger pinned his foe at 174 as the Aggies went ahead 25-15. DelVal forfeited at 197, making it a four-point match, but Roseberry completed the win with a 9-4 decision.

In the opening match against Stevens Tech, DelVal received wins from Brenden Velez (125) and Ambacher in the early going. Freshman Rob Duxbury nearly pulled off a big upset at 149 as he went to overtime with eighth-ranked Zach Wilhelm, but Wilhem came away with the 4-2 decision. Stevens Tech took the next five weights, including three from nationally-ranked foes, before a Roseberry major made it a 30-10 final.

Velez and Ambacher's victories gave DelVal a 7-6 advantage against Messiah after three matches. The two teams split the next two with Sekou Harris earning a 9-8 decision at 157 for the Aggies. However, the Falcons picked up 17 points in three of the next four weights to pull away. Schweiger had a pin and Roseberry a decision for DelVal's remaining points.

Ambacher's win over Grossman produced the Aggies' lone points over the first six weight classes against Wilkes. Schweiger had a major decision and Roseberry was awarded a forfeit for their final seven points.

DelVal will head to Hunter College for a quad match on Saturday, January 14.
