DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Defending national champion
Zach Roseberry ran his consecutive winning streak to 49 and the heavyweight moved into a tie for second place on the Delaware Valley University all-time victory list, but it was SUNY Cortland that registered a 43-4 triumph over the host Aggies.
The Red Dragons improved to 12-6 in dual meets while DelVal slipped to 7-6. The Aggies will be right back on the mat on Saturday morning (11 a.m.) when they host fourth-ranked Ithaca College.
Roseberry, who has not lost a match since November of 2015, upped his season record to 29-0 with a dominating, 18-5 major decision over Zach Gifford. He registered six takedowns, a four-point near fall, one escape and riding time for the win. Roseberry moved his career record to 122-12, tying him with former teammate Aaron Karns '15 and two-time national champion and national Hall of Famer Brandon Totten '96 for the second spot on the all-time list. He is just seven victories shy of tying Kyle Bilquist '10 for the record.
However, the rest of the night belonged to Cortland as the Red Dragons had two pins, two major decisions, two decisions, one technical fall, a forfeit and an injury default. It began at 125 where a
Brenden Velez takedown with 12 seconds left forced overtime. However, in the second extra sessions, Cortland's Andrew Roden picked up a reversal and used that for a 5-3 win.
Maverick Passaro followed with a 15-0, technical fall victory over
Tucker Velez at 133. Then at 141, the Red Dragons' Da'mani Burns caught third-ranked
Tim Ambacher and pinned him less than two minutes into the first period (1:49). DelVal's
Rob Duxbury notched a takedown late in the first period of his 149-poind match with Matt Caputo was forced to default due to an injury just seconds later. That gave Cortland a 20-0 advantage through the first four weights.
Defending 157-pound national champion Bobby Dierna took the mat next for the Red Dragons and he earned an 18-9 major decision over
Sekou Harris to remain undefeated (10-0). Zack Zupan (7-0) also stayed perfect with a 9-1 major decision over
Brandon Rudy at 165 and Colin Barber dropped
Steve Horvath in 2:07 of their 174-pound match-up for a 37-0 team score.
Returning national qualifier and fifth-ranked
Ben Schweiger wrestled up a weight class for DelVal on Friday as he battled Deuly Espinal at 184 pounds. The match was tied at 2-2 before Espinal got a takedown midway through the third period. Schweiger picked up an escape but fell short, 4-3. Kevin Morgan was awarded a forfeit win at 197 before Roseberry's win ended the evening.
