DOYLESTOWN (PA) – The Delaware Valley University wrestling team picked up wins in all 10 weight classes, as the Aggies registered a 49-0 home shutout over Temple University on Saturday afternoon.
It was the first home match of the season for DelVal, which improved to 4-5 in dual meets. The Owls, who returned to the wrestling circuit as a club sport last year and are now NAIA affiliated, fell to 5-12.
The Aggies recorded three technical falls, two pins, two decisions, two forfeits and one major decision for the win. The match began at 125 pounds where
Brenden Velez (17-10) was awarded a forfeit victory. Nationally-ranked Conor Kirkergard (eighth at 133 pounds) then cruised to a 16-4 major decision over Alex Barday. Kirkegard improved to 18-6 on the season.
Tim Ambacher then notched his 11
th win of the year (11-3) with a dominant, 17-1 technical fall victory over Sarkis Dovlatyan. All the points came in the first period.
Nick Menkin (6-7) also ended his 149-pound match in the first period as he pinned Joshua Lloret in just 26 seconds.
Sekou Harris (6-14) had his arm raised for a forfeit win at 157 pounds and DelVal had a 27-0 lead after five weight classes.
Ben Schweiger, wrestled his first match in nearly a month, and the 165 pounder picked up two takedowns, an escape and riding time for a 6-2 decision over Mike Walsh. Schweiger, who is listed as a contender in the
D3wrestle.com rankings, is now 8-9 on the season.
David Furmato followed with his third victory of the season as he earned a 23-4, technical fall win over Jake Landmesser at 174 pounds. Senior
Nick Della Fera then dropped Aram Soukiasian with 52 seconds left in the first period (2:08) of the 184-pound match-up. The win moved Della Fera's season record to 14-10.
The match of the afternoon took place at 197 pounds as DelVal's
Josh Richardson (10-10) battled Marcus Newsom (12-1). Richardson led 5-2 before Newsome scored six straight points for an 8-5, third period lead. Richardson got a reversal with a minute left then picked up a near fall late in the period. Riding time made it an 11-8 decision for the Aggie freshman.
Two-time All-American
Zach Roseberry hit the mat for DelVal and second-ranked heavyweight in Division III racked up 11 takedowns, a reversal and riding time for a 25-10, technical fall triumph over Mark Kukulka. The win was the 19
th in 20 matches this season for Roseberry and the junior moved into a tie for 20
th place on the school' all-time list with 83 career victories.
DelVal returns to action on Thursday, February 11 (7:00 pm) for a home match against Centenary College on Senior Night.
