#10 TCNJ Edges DelVal Wrestlers, 21-20 On Criteria



EWING (NJ) – The Delaware Valley University wrestling team gave 10th-ranked The College of New Jersey all it could handle on Friday evening but the Aggies suffered a tough 21-20 loss by way of criteria.

DelVal wraps up the dual meet season with a 5-6 record while the Lions improved to 18-2.

The Aggies trailed 20-14 entering the final bout at heavyweight. Second-ranked junior Zach Roseberry, a two-time All-American, came up big with a pin at 4:05 to tie the match at 20-20. The referees went to the scorebook and TCNJ pulled out the victory due to having more individual points scored in the match (48-45).

Sophomore Brenden Velez got the night started with a narrow 1-0 decision at 125 pounds for Delaware Valley. The Lions knotted the score as senior Conor Kirkegard, ranked eighth and 10th respectively at 133 pounds, was edged out, 3-2.

Sophomore Tim Ambacher (141) gave the Aggies an 8-3 advantage with a 23-9 technical fall. Another tight bout occurred at 149 pounds where sophomore Nick Menkin came out on the short end of a 3-2 decision.

TCNJ took its first lead of the evening at 157 pounds. Antonio Mancella, ranked 10th in the nation, bested junior Sekou Harris, 7-2 and the Lions had a 9-8 advantage. Junior Ben Schweiger put DelVal in front again with a 9-2 win at 165 pounds.

The Lions led 14-11 after a technical fall win at 174 pounds but senior Nick Della Fera got a huge 5-2 overtime victory for the Aggies at 184 pounds, defeating 10th-ranked Dan Wojtaszek. TCNJ went ahead with a pin at 197 pounds to set up the Roseberry victory.

DelVal will now prepare for the NCAA East Regional at Washington & Lee University on Saturday-Sunday, February 27-28.
