Zach Roseberry (285) claimed individual titles as Delaware Valley University, ranked 24
th in Division III, placed sixth out of 16 teams at the New Standard Corporation Invitational hosted by York College.
The Aggies racked up 89.5 points, missing the top five by just one as Ferrum College had 90.5 points. Third-ranked Ithaca College won the team championship with 146.5 points while No. 5 Roger Williams University (135 points), No. 11 Stevens Institute of Technology (126 points) and No. 6 Johnson & Wales University (125.5 points) took the second through fourth spots.
Ambacher had a day to remember showing on Saturday as he won five matches, including a pair over nationally-ranked wrestlers. The junior opened the tournament with a 10-3 decision over Pat McGinnis (Baldwin-Wallace) and followed with a 12-3 major over Amir Harper (Ferrum). That put Ambacher into the quarterfinals and he knocked off Joe Ferrinde (Johnson & Wales), who was ranked as high as 10
th in one of the two Division III rankings, with a 6-4 decision.
In the semifinals, Ambacher faced the top seed of the tournament in Nick Wahba of Ithaca. Wahba was ranked third in one national poll and seventh in another, but it was Ambacher who came away with the 9-7 decision. That put him in the finals against second-seeded Anthony Gagliano of The College of New Jersey in the finals and Ambacher continued his run with a 4-1 decision for the crown. Ambacher is now 11-3 on the season.
Schweiger, a senior and returning national qualifier, pinned three of his first four opponents for a berth in the finals. He dropped Anders Bright (Johns Hopkins) in just 1:45 and needed 55 seconds more to pin Blake Rosenbaum (Ferrum). Following a 7-4 decision over Taylor Shay (Roger Williams), Schweiger then downed Jaison White (Ithaca) with 15 seconds left in the first period (2:45) of their semifinal match-up.
In the finals, Schweiger was paired against the top seed and nationally-ranked Stephen Jarrell (Johnson & Wales). Jarrell was fifth in one poll and eighth in another, however, it was Schweiger whose arm was raised as the tournament champ as he cruised to a 9-3 decision. The five wins on Saturday improved his record to 14-4 on the year.
Roseberry continued his dominance as the returning national champion and number one ranked heavyweight upped his winning streak to 36, a streak that spans more than 13 months of action. The senior opened his tournament run with a 13-4 major decision over Frances Walter (Merchant Marine) and followed with a pin in 6:07 over Carlos Leyva (Ferrum). Roseberry then had an 18-3, technical fall triumph over Eric Eckstein (Elizabethtown) in the quarterfinals and a 7-3 decision over Jake O'Brien (Ithaca) in the semifinals. In the finals, he blanked Kyle Foster (Roger Williams), 10-0, to up his season record to 16-0 and his career mark to 109-12
DelVal had a fourth placewinner in returning national qualifier
Brenden Velez as he took sixth at 133 pounds. Velez opened the invitational with a 10-7 decision before falling into the consolation bracket. He then went 2-2 with one pin the rest of the way and moved his season record to 9-5.
The Aggies will head to Nashville, Tennessee in two weeks to compete in the Gator Duals.
