Box Score DOYLESTOWN (PA) – The Delaware Valley University women's basketball team had four players reach double figures in scoring, but visiting Rowan University, an NCAA qualifier last season, came away with the 71-67, non-conference victory in the season opener for both teams.
The Aggies, with two freshmen, two sophomores and one senior in their starting lineup, jumped out to a quick 12-6 advantage thanks to five points from the senior,
Sam Foy. The Profs went on an 8-0 run, but DelVal scored five of the last seven points for a 17-16 advantage after the opening quarter.
The Aggies opened the second quarter with seven straight points for their largest lead of the game as
Danielle Skedzielewski hit the first four and
Morgan Mitchell drained a trey. Rowan answered with six in a row before DelVal upped the lead back to five, 26-23 with 4:24 left. The rest of the half belonged to the Profs as a 7-2 run, thanks to four points from Alexis Kriley and three from Summer Crilley, gave the visitors a two-point advantage at the break.
Rowan used a 10-0 run early in the third to build its lead to 40-30. Back came DelVal with 10 straight of its own to tie it as four different players scored in the spurt. The Profs quickly regained the lead and took a 53-51 edge into the fourth.
There were four ties in the final quarter, the last coming when Skedzielewski hit a tough layup with 4:41 to go to make it 61-61. Rowan put three on the board over the next three minutes to take the lead for good. A jumper by Mitchell made it 64-63 with 1:49 remaining, but the Profs scored five straight to put the contest away.
Skedzielewski, a sophomore, had 15 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Aggies. Foy finished with 14 points and seven boards while Mitchell, a sophomore, was a spark off the bench with 12 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Freshman
Ashley Smink had 10 points and four assists while sophomore
Monika Smallwood added eight points.
Crilley led all players with 18 points. Anyssa Sanchez added 12 points for Rowan while Valerie Garofalo notched nine points and nine assists.
DelVal will head to St. Mary's College of Maryland to take on the host school in the Dan Greene Memorial Invitational on Friday, November 18 (5 p.m.).
