COLLEGEVILLE (PA) – The Delaware Valley University wrestling team crowned a tournament-high four individual champions at the Ursinus College Fall Brawl on Saturday. Team scoring was not held at the event.
Kordell Rush (125),
Tim Ambacher (141), returning national qualifier
Ben Schweiger (184) and defending national champion
Zach Roseberry (285) each finished in first place in their respective weight classes. Returning national qualifier
Brenden Velez also placed at the Fall Brawl as he took fourth at 133 pounds.
Rush, a freshman, continued his stellar start to his collegiate career. He picked up two victories, including one over a wrestler from Division I Navy, at the Blue-Gold Duals last Sunday. Six days later, he received an opening round bye before earning a pin in 2:03 over Alex Velez of Camden County College. That put Rush in a quarterfinal match-up against top-seeded Aslan Kilic of Navy Prep and he notched a 13-3 major decision. A 10-0 major decision in the semis put Rush in the title match against second-seeded Chris Tan of Ursinus. Tan was the NCAA East Regional champion and a national qualifier a season ago, but Rush did not allow a point in a 5-0 win and his first tournament title.
Ambacher, a junior, and Schweiger, a senior, also notched the first tournament championships of their career. Ambacher was the top seed in his weight class and reached the semifinals with 8-1 and 14-8 decisions. He then knocked off Colin Devlin of Gettysburg, 9-4, to earn a spot in the finals. Ambacher completed the 4-0 day and improved to 5-1 on the year with a 4-3 triumph over Kyle Trybus of Navy Prep.
Schweiger, who is up two weight classes from he wrestled last season, stood atop a podium for the first time after a 3-0 showing. He was the top seed and had a bye before downing Matt Cornerly of Camden County College in 47 seconds. A 12-0 major decision over Vincent Levin of Liberty put Schweiger into the finals against John Boyle of Western New England. Schweiger had his arm raised in victory thanks to a 5-3 decision that upped his season mark to 4-2.
Roseberry had a chance at DelVal history on Saturday and the senior had little trouble at achieving it. The top seed and number one ranked heavyweight in Division III cruised with first period pins in his first two matches to reach the semifinals. He then followed with a 21-5, technical fall victory over Zach Sintobin of The Apprentice School. That was career win number 99 for Roseberry and he went for the century mark against a familiar foe in second-seeded Matan Peleg of Ursinus. Roseberry was strong in a 5-1 triumph as he notched his 27
th consecutive win, improved to 7-0 on the year and moved his career mark to 100-12. He is one of just 14 wrestlers in the program's storied history to reach the coveted milestone.
Velez, who went 3-0 including a pair of wins over Navy wrestlers last week, reached the semifinals with a technical fall and a decision. The junior fell to top-seeded Bryan Pflanz of Elizabethtown, 4-3, but bounced back a decision in the consolation semifinals. Velez was edged, 3-2, in the consolation finals for a fourth-place showing.
Senior
Sekou Harris and junior
Chris Yocum each won two matches and reached the semifinals at 157 and 197 pounds respectively. Freshman
Rob Duxbury had a strong showing with four wins in the 149-pound consolation bracket. Junior
