Zach Roseberry captured the heavyweight title to lead seven placewinners for the Delaware Valley University wrestling team at the Ursinus Fall Brawl on Saturday. There was no team scoring.
Roseberry received a bye through the first round followed by four straight victories to capture first place, one of which was a fall over Joshua Travers of Division I Liberty University. Roseberry had one pin, one major decision and two decisions, including a 6-1 win over Ursinus' Matan Peleg in the final.
Sophomore
Alex Price also had a first round bye before winning three matches to reach the final at 197 pounds. He had one fall, one major decision and one decision. Unfortunately, Price suffered an injury and had to forfeit the last match and settle for second.
The Aggies had three grapplers place third in seniors
Conor Kirkegard (133) and
Nick Della Fera (174) and freshman
Josh Richardson (184). Kirkegard received a bye before back-to-back wins to reach the semifinals. After suffering a loss, he bounced back to win his next two matches. Kirkegard recorded two pins and a 6-0 decision before winning the third place match due to forfeit.
Della Fera also reached the semifinals via bye, fall and major decision before dropping a match. He produced a pin and an 11-6 decision in the consolation bracket. Richardson suffered a semifinal loss after a bye, pin and major decision. He earned a fall in his first consolation match before taking third with teammate
Chris Jastrzebski, a sophomore, coming in fourth. After a first round bye, Jastrzebski dropped his second round match before reeling off four consecutive wins, three by pin, to reach the third place match.
Senior
Steve Orlic also had a fourth place at 149 pounds. He won his first match by major decision before falling in the second round. Orlic recovered to post five straight victories and reach the third place match. He then suffered a 6-4 loss to Quinn Merrigan of Gettysburg College.
Other standouts included sophomores
Brenden Velez (125) and
Michael Caldwell (149) and juniors
Sekou Harris (157) and
Ben Schweiger (165). All four were one win away from the consolation final.
"We had a good outing overall from a relatively young team," said head coach
Steve Cantrell. "We graduated three All-Americans and five national qualifiers from last year so I think it was a good showing from our guys and it's something we can build on."
DelVal travels to the United States Naval Academy for the Navy Classic on Saturday, November 21 (10:00 a.m.).
