DelVal Wrestlers Open Season With Pair Of Losses At Division I Navy

ANNAPOLIS (MD) – The Delaware Valley University wrestling team, one of the traditional Division III powers, put itself to the test to start the 2015-16 season as it traveled to the United States Naval Academy for a pair of matches against the Division I Midshipmen. The Aggies fell, 36-4, to the Blue Squad and followed with a 27-11 setback to the Gold Squad.

DelVal, coached by 1991 Naval Academy graduate Steve Cantrell, was victorious in four weights against Navy on Sunday, including both heavyweight contests by two-time Division III All-American Zach Roseberry.

Roseberry, who placed third at nationals last year and is ranked second heading into the 2015-16 campaign, picked up the lone win against the Blue Squad with an 11-2 major decision over Carter Shipley. Later in the day, the junior earned an 8-1decision over Thomas Ott to conclude the match against the Gold Squad. The two wins improved Roseberry's career record to 66-11.

Brenden Velez (125) and nationally-ranked Conor Kirkegard (133) picked up the remaining Aggie wins against the Gold Squad, which gave the Aggies an 8-0 lead at the time. Velez was dominant in a 16-0, technical fall victory over Jordan Denslow. Velez nearly opened the day with a win against returning starter Brant Leadbeter, but dropped a 7-4 decision.

Kirkegard, who is ranked ninth in his weight class by D3wrestle.com, earned a 7-1 decision over the Gold Squad's Dane Lemmon. Earlier in the day, he dropped an 11-1 major decision to returning starter Zack Davis.

Navy, which also picked up a pair of wins over York College, features a pair of nationally-ranked wrestlers on its Blue Squad in NCAA qualifiers and EIWA champions. Jadaen Bernstein (14th at 174 pounds) and Matthew Miller (10th at 184 pounds).  DelVal's Ben Schweiger battled Bernstein throughout their contest before falling, 12-5. Miller picked up the lone pin of the Blue match.

The Aggies return to action on Saturday, November 14 when they head to nearby Ursinus College for the Fall Brawl.
