NINTH-RANKED AGGIES GO 4-0, DOMINATE AT NORTH/SOUTH DUALS

COLLEGEVILLE (PA) – Delaware Valley College showed why its ranked ninth in all of Division III as the Aggies lost just 11 of 40 individual matches, en route to a perfect 4-0 record at the North/South Duals.

Delaware Valley routed Springfield College (37-10), Hunter College (28-9) and McDaniel College (37-9) and also posted a 24-15 triumph over 22nd-ranked Waynesburg University at the Duals, which were hosted by Ursinus College. The wins upped the Aggies' record to 8-2 on the season as they now have two weeks to prepare for the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships (January 24 at Wilkes University).

It was a dominant day of action for Delaware Valley, which was even without the services of the top-ranked 149-pound wrestler in Division III in returning All-American Vinny Fava. Five Aggies had perfect records of 4-0 or 3-0, including fellow returning All-Americans Aaron Karns and Zach Roseberry.

Karns, a two-time All-American who is ranked third in the 197-pound weight class went 4-0 with two pins, a major decision and a decision. In the process, the senior moved up to ninth place on the school's all-time list with 107 career victories (107-23). Karns is 18-3 on the season.

Roseberry, ranked fourth in Division III at heavyweight, upped his mark to 18-3 on the season after the sophomore notched three consecutive decisions to start the day.

Zac Haynes (133) and Ben Schweiger (174) each went 4-0 while Connor Gabriel won all three of his matches at 184 pounds. Haynes improved his season mark to 16-5 while Schweiger, who pinned three of his four foes, moved his record to 13-3. Gabriel has won 14 of 21 matches this year.

Delaware Valley opened a 15-0 lead against Springfield thanks to a pin (by Joshua Di Santo), a forfeit and a major decision. Springfield won the next two weight classes to pull to within five, 15-10, but the Aggies swept the final five bouts, including pins from Schweiger and Karns, for the 37-10 triumph.

The Waynesburg contest was next and a battle of ranked teams in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) poll. A decision by Connor Kirkegard at 125 and a pin by Haynes at 133 gave the Aggies a 9-0 lead, but Waynesburg took the next four weights, including one pin, for a 15-9 lead. However, Schweiger earned a decision and Gabriel followed with a 17-0, technical fall blanking to regain the advantage at 17-15. Karns and Roseberry put the match away with a major decision and a decision respectively for the 24-15 final.

Hunter, which is ranked 22nd in the d3wrestler.com poll (Delaware Valley is fourth in this poll) led the Aggies, 7-3 after three weights, but Delaware Valley took the next two for a 10-7 advantage. Alec Horan nearly upset 10th-ranked Jesse Bader at 165, but fell 3-1 in overtime for a 10-10 contest. Once again, the Aggies swept the final four weights for a 28-9 finish (Hunter was deducted a team point for unsportsmanlike conduct).

Delaware Valley then ended the North/South Duals by winning eight of 10 weight classes, for the 37-9 triumph over McDaniel. Jeff Reimel (157), Schweiger and Karns notched pins in their respective matches.
