COLLEGEVILLE (PA) –
Zac Haynes and
Zach Roseberry captured individual titles at 133 pounds and heavyweight respectively while five other Delaware Valley College wrestlers placed in the top four as the Aggies competed at the Ursinus College Fall Brawl. Team scoring was not held at the event.
In addition to the first-place efforts by Haynes and Roseberry, Delaware Valley had a pair of runner-ups in
Connor Kirkegard (125 pounds) and
Vinny Fava (149).
Connor Gabriel (184) and
Aaron Karns (197) placed third while
Brenden Velez (125) finished fourth.
Haynes improved his record to 6-0 on the season as he went 4-0 at the tournament. He opened the day by pinning Rory Bruce (RIT) in just 26 seconds and, after a medical forfeit, dropped Anthony Petril of Ursinus in 4:50. That put Haynes in the finals against Christian Hoogheem of Ursinus and he notched a 9-3 decision for the Fall Brawl title.
Roseberry, a returning All-American who is ranked second in Division III at heavyweight this year, posted four wins on Saturday to up his record to 5-1 on the young season. He notched 13-1 and 11-0 major decisions over Alexander Raff (Hunter) and Evan Canaday (Liberty) to reach the semifinals. Roseberry then edged Joshua Pelletier, also of Division I club team Liberty, 3-2, and followed with a 4-3 triumph over Division I wrestler Scot Augustine of American in the finals.
Kirkegard reached the 125-pound finals thanks to two technical fall victories and two pins. He had 17-0 triumphs over both Lenny Ogozalek (Gettysburg) and Ben Batulanon (Western New England) while the pins were against Phil Torresani of Elizabethtown (1:35) and Tim Nordan of Liberty (3:36). In the finals, Kirkegard met David Terao of Division I American and fell 10-2. He is now 5-2 on the year.
Fava, a returning All-American and the top-ranked 149-pound wrestler in Division III, had an 8-2 decision over Michael Dahlstrom (American), an 8-0 major over Brandon Giovanetti (Franklin& Marshall) and a 6-5 decision over Nicholas Gil (US Naval Academy) – all Division I foes – to reach the finals. He faced another Division I wrestler in Cole Moseley of American in the finals and was edged by a 3-2 decision. Fava is 4-2 on the season.
Gabriel reached the 184-pound quarterfinals with a 6-3 win, but fell to the eventual champion. In the consolation bracket, he picked up four wins with three decisions and one pin. In the battle for third, Gabriel earned a 3-2 decision over Jake Poonton of McDaniel for his fifth win in eight matches this year.
Karns, a two-time All-American and the number three ranked 197-pound wrestler in Division III, pinned his first opponent and notched a 10-0 major to reach the semifinals. There he ran into Brett Dempsey of American and fell to the Division I foe and eventual champion. Karns bounced back with two wins in the consolation bracket, including a 2-0 blanking of Daniel Hawkins (US Naval Academy). Karns, a senior, is 5-2 on the year and now six victories shy of the 100-win plateau for a career.
Velez, a freshman, went 4-2 in the first collegiate competition of his career. He reached the consolation finals with three decisions and a medical forfeit before falling, 5-1, to Petril.
